I always travel with Plan B for buying gas. If I arrive at the little town of Rabbit Shoe, 150 miles from someplace and another 150 miles to some where, and I find that the gas station was designed for Model T's I activate Plan B.
Plan B, park and unhook the TT. Go fill gas tank and then return for TT. Of course My wife keeps a close eye on me during this procedure to make sure that I do not forget to go back and get the TT.

I run diesel now. Usually go to the truck stops as we fuel & eat there. Plenty of parking and I get a frequent fueler discount & at Pilot, I can start the pump with my card. By the time I run around looking for the best price, I can be filling up & eating. Just me.
I agree with all above when using gas stations. go on by if it looks too tight. I tried getting into a BP station in Erie,PA that was under construction. It cost me $1200 when I scraped the side of the TT.

If the station is tight and the only one around: wait for an ideal pump to use.

I use the Pilot/Flying J stores where I can since I have a card that gives me a discount and they are easy to get in and out.

I try to get gas at exits that have multiple stations to choose from so I can select the one with the widest lanes and plenty of room past the pump to make any turns if needed. This usally means I hit the Pilots, Flying J's, Super America's. etc. Basically the SUPER convienence stores with 8 or more pumps.
The main thing I try to do is spot the best in/out path with the straight path and no tight spots. Being mindful of the width of the space I'm pulling into is the main thing. Get into a narrow spot and their may not be enough room to get out.

I have researched the address of the larger fleet fuel providers Pilot / Flying J etc along my route and did a satellite map of the location to get a better idea of how to approach the pump islands.
I have also figured out my average mileage per tank plotted those locations on the route. I then look for the town in my fuel range and reviewed satellite images of those areas as well. To date I have had no surprises when I arrived at a fuel station.

I usually start looking a little before the guage hits 1/2 because usually by then I've driven long enough and need a stretch.

Start looking at 1/2 tank like has been mentioned. Make sure you see you exit route before entering Truck stops have more space to maneuver around. When pulling into gas stations with perpendicular pumps look for the spots on the end. You can usually pull straight out without having to turn.
Also keep an eye on parking spots. If someone parks in front they may block you in when trying to exit.

What everybody else has said, and turn off your fridge first. If it's full and cold, you can travel for 4-6 hours with it off (as long as it stays closed).

Most modern stations have enough room to make the turn. Mine is 31 ft hitch to bumper and I've only had to back out once. The trick is to try and use the far right or left pump and stay 4 or 5 feet away from the pump. That gives you some extra space on the turn to get out and you don't have to worry about the back of your trailer swinging into a vehicle in the next lane.
