Well, I've read enough on this forum to believe I need to trade my brand new 2012 F250 King Ranch for an F350. I'm overweight by quite a bit on the GVWR of 10,000. I tow a 33 foot fifth wheel with a pin wt. of 2100#. Truck weighs 8300# empty with wife and a few items in it. The Ford dealer is offering to exchange the 250 KR for a 2012 F350 Lariat. Will cost me around $5000. Would anyone else do this or am I overreacting? I tow just a few times a year and no more than 300 miles on any one trip? The truck squats just a little when hooked to the fifth wheel but handles fine. Could use some straighforward advice please.

Are you getting a dually? If not, it is a waste of $5k. Even if you are getting a dually, your weights are good with an F250.

I spent $3000 on a Hensley Arrow back in the day even though many told me "I was overeacting". But to me, my peace of mind was worth it and in your situation, being continuously over the GVWR would not sit well with me.

I think the dealership is being quite fair with you (assuming it's a dually) - I would jump on the swap and have peace of mind in knowing I'm legal in my numbers.

Good luck

How much does your fully loaded trailer weigh? Are you exceeding the Gross Combined Weight Rating of your truck with the trailer hitched up? $5000.00? Mighty nice of your dealer, ha. Five grand sure will buy a lot of fuel even now. The F-250 and F-350 in same configuration(wheelbase, cab size, etc..) are not that much different. Big difference is going from Single rear wheel to Dual rear wheels, that is where a big gain in axle carrying capacity and stability come in.

Keep your kr. It will tow that fine. Add air bags if you get squat.

IMO your overreacting. Now if your just wanting the bigger truck then its your money.

You sure don't need a DRW or SRW for a 33' 5th wheel trailer with a 2150 lb pin weight. My pin weight is 2200 lbs and have no issues towing for over 200k miles with a '03 2500 Dodge/Cummins.

If I was worried about being overweight I would find a scale in my area and weigh the trucks front and rear axles while hooked to the trailer. That way I would know if the truck was actually overweight.

I have to ask, because I am thinking of looking at the F250 myself - it seriously weighs 8200 basically empty and has a GVWR of 10,000? Making a payload of only 1,800 lbs? That just seems daft - my Dodge 2500 has a 3k lbs and that is the range I need to stay in. I thought the Dodge 2500 Megacab Cummins was the only three quarter ton pickup with lousy payload. I guess I gotta do more research.

FWIW I don't believe in exceeding the manufacturers GVWR, you never know when you will be in a region where that limit is the law. I could care less what anyone else does, but I stick to the sticker!

Personally, I'd just get a set of air bags to take care of keeping the truck level. There are a number of fanatics on this forum that will insist otherwise. But there is so little difference in an F250 vs F350.

My 2012 F250 is close to it's rating, but I have never felt the slightest feeling that everything isn't working just fine. But I do have air bags.
