Trailer life magazine this month is reviewing a Fox Mountain 5th wheel and is pulling it with an 06 F150. They are doing an on going upgrade project to make the F150 better suited. Just thought it was ironic that Trailer Life magazine is doing a 5'er/1/2 ton test about the same time as numerous posts have been popping up with guys interested in towing 5'ers with their 1/2 tons. The article did state that the 5'er their testing (Fox Mountain 245RKS) would more than likely once loaded would requier the HD package that Ford offers. Not sure if there is a link to the article or not since it just came out.

I've never cared much for 5ers on a 1/2 tons because it translates to a smaller trailer in terms of room due to the added pin weight. 5er to me means "big trailer" and none of the big ones will work on a 1/2 ton. A conventional TT on a 1/2 ton is more bang for the buck IMO.

I hope they tell the whole truth on this issue otherwise they are doing a great dis-service to a lot of readers. Sure there are a few 5th wheels that specially optioned 1/2 tons can tow well but they are few and far between.

There is not NOW nor have there EVER been any issue with 5th wheel towing using a half ton truck. I seriously doubt that there is ANY half ton truck on the market that could not handle at least SOME 5th wheel trailers. It's ALWAYS been about the number not the name of the truck. There are 5th wheels light enough to be easily handled by even compact trucks. Nothing has changed except almost NOBODY refers to their trucks as "half ton" trucks any more. They're 150 or 1500 or (in the case of foreign badged trucks) "full sized" trucks.

Not really sure what upgrades would be required for towing a 5th wheel with the F 150 since it already has as much as 3,050 lb. of available payload. You just have to have a 5th wheel that has less than that as a PIN weight and where the trailer weight is less than the rating Ford has assigned to the truck. Just like with larger trucks, you may feel more comfortable towing with air bags or helper springs when towing close to your rated payload.

Check out my combo in sig pic. This is the fourth season for this rig and I wouldn't change a thing. Maybe it works because it's a Tundra!

I think the issue would be that the truck they are using is an 06. I dont think they had the HD packages like they do now. The new F-150 are pretty amazing payload wise. Now if they would make a 250 with a bigger Ecoboost I would be all over it

That's just my point; they do indeed make 5er's that work just fine on a 1/2 ton, ie, they're aimed at the 1/2 ton market, but they're all small trailers so one has to ask the question, "what's the point"? The conventional TT is a much better value for 1/2 tons IMO.
