Sue, while Iron Creek Lodge has a campground, the lodge has been closed for several years, at least 4 I believe. It is for sale, $675,000cnd, was the last price I saw on the real estate listing. Not a bad price, if a person wants to get into the Alaska Hwy roadhouse business and has lots of money to spend. LOL It is one of the newer lodges, that I have seen listed being for sale. Suspect it meets most of the new government codes that seem to be giving some of the older places problems in compliance.
I have always been interested in knowing why this lodge was named what it is named. Just before you get to the lodge, there is a hill and the creek at the bottom of it is called Irons Creek (with an S on the end of it} but the lodge doesn't have the S. Who knows? The Milepost claims the creek got it's name from the early day construction crews/truck drivers, stopped here to chain up, before pulling the hill in winter time and they referred to their chains as "tire irons". Hence, it became known as Irons Creek.

Joe, you're right. I was thinking of Coal River and wrote Iron Creek. Coal River lodge is undergoing various changes each year, also for sale last I saw, but is usually open each summer. Fuel prices are usually extremely high there but it is a decent stopover.

Laird hot spring is a must for me. Sooth by back. There is a parking area across the street from the cg if the cg booked solid . Last time there the parking area was nearly full come morning.Also, I think the Denali Hwy is a must, but we spent 3 days crossing it. 100 miles of dirt, but beautiful and unspoiled.
