We had this happen once. It turned out to be due to the ice maker water valve having frozen in the open position, or something equivalent. All we did was clean up the mess and defrost the unit. It worked fine afterwards.

If the fridge is off one possibility is the ice maker was full when turned off and the water never froze and splashed out.
We always turn the water off to the icemaker the last night before going home, when even use the icemaker, and that will allow it to run and mostly empty the tray so not much to wipe out later.
