You'll need to check the restrictions on the tunnel you'll be going through. They're not all the same.

I-64 from Richmond to Norfolk/VA beach requires RVs to stop at a check point. I pull in, roll down my window and tell him: "Two, 30lb tanks and they are turned off." So far, they write some data down and waive me on. Same process, eight times in two years. The only once was there a minor delay as a semi was stopped in front of me at the checkpoint. The only pain is the short on-ramp. Eastbound is not a problem as at 5PM the traffic is crawing so merging is easy. However Westbound at 11AM the traffic is at speed, can get interesting...

There are very few tunnels that completely restrict propane tanks, but many will insist that they be turned off while in the tunnel.

Experience is that which you gain immediately after you actually needed it.

You can not go thru the 93 tunnel in Boston with your propane tanks. It does not matter if they are on or off. There are signs posted and they consider this a Hazardous material. I spoke to a Mass State Trooper about this and he told me it was a minimum $500 fine. He was not sure if it was $500 per violation or $500 per tank. I occasionally bring my camper thru the tunnel, but leave the tanks at home and remove the cover from the trailer so that they can see that I do not have tanks hooked up. Fortunately I have access to a tank where I typically go. Most other tunnels simply require that you shut your tank off while you go thru the tunnel.

It is the same thing as you are still transporting the propane thru the tunnel. Unfortunately if you are headed to the south shore your only other options is to take 128 around the city.

In traveling through 49 states (some a number of different times) I've never been required to close my LP BOTTLES while passing through tunnels. MOST of the ones that would require that are in urban areas and that's just not where I tend to RV and I usually bypass metro areas any time I can so it's just never become an issue. Not sure what the rules for LP TANKS are since trailers don't have tanks and I never ran into it with either of my motorhomes.

Good luck / Skip

Skip, I guess I don't understand your statement that trailers don't have LP tanks. I have two 30 lb LP tanks mounted on the front of my travel trailer (on the tongue). Am I missunderstanding?
