One of the negatives of HTT camping is outside noise comes right through the tent ends. About one in eight trips out we camp next to someone who thinks "quiet time" does not apply to them and they have no concern for others. Normally I just turn on the AC or dehumidifier. However, when camping without hook ups this does not work. Anyone use these noise machines that kind of muffle out other noises and if so do you know of any that run off batteries? Thanks

I have severe tinnitus and use sound machines when I'm at home or camping. When I'm camping I have a Brookstone "Tranquil Moments" travel alarm clock. It has several different types of sound with adjustable volume. I use the "babbling brook" or "rain" type sounds. It runs off 4 AA batteries or an AC adapter. The best price will be on Ebay.

My wife has slept with soft ear plugs for years. Mainly because she is a light sleeper and any noise at all wakes her. She has slept thru many camping parties with ear plugs in. Easier to transport and use zero electricity and batteries not required.

I have another suggestion, if you have an iPod or other MP3 player, or a CD player that can be set to loop: there are white noise sound tracks that cost around a buck.

My favorite (YMMV) is a one hour mountain rainstorm track I found on iTunes. I put it on my iPod or on a CD. Being an hour long, everybody is sound asleep long before the momentary pause as the player restarts the loop, so it'll run all night. It is helpful for outside noises as well as snoring camping buds, very soothing, and the price was right. There are other such tracks of varied lengths available also.

We run our bedroom vent fan (with lid open or closed depending on temps) when sleeping and it covers most any exterior noises. I have used earplugs in the past, but my DW could not sleep comfortably when using them. Quiet hours does not mean complete, absolute silence if that is what you are expecting. Excessively loud talking/laughing/music, and generator use are forbidden, but watching tv, or enjoying conversation and cocktails, or whatever else you do within the confines of your rig is acceptable. We all have to be tolerant if we choose to camp among others as those with tents and similar sided units tend to make plenty of their own noise as well. Happy camping!!!

If you still have some of those baby monitors, use the speaker without turning on the mic. This creates a hissing noise. We use it @ home for the baby twins and bring it in our camping trips. They usually use 2AAs.

We use a portable radio and turn on National Public Radio. After an hr of listening to that, you will sleep thru an earthquake.
