Brett's correct ... VW always denies that any of it's vehicles are towable four wheels down. I have towed several Volkswagen's over the years, the current is a 2008 Beetle. The key is a 5-speed manual transmission which can be towed four wheels down. There can be issues with the 6-speed manual, or with all wheel drive.
I did a towable inquiry of VW Can for a 2011 EOS and was advised that none of the VW line-up is towable either 4 down or dolly. They indicated a trailer was the only way!

Based on their info for all 2011 VW with manual transmission, "All Volkswagen 5 SPEED manual transmissions are safe to tow. The new SIX SPEED MANUAL transmission is unknown..no information is available. Check with Remco on baseplate availability."

Right, that's what I was saying. I checked Remco. I have a hard time with the all VW manual thing. Is that saying that no auto trans or AWD can be towed at all?
Ok, got the official word from VW. guess I could have done that to start with but frankly I like talking to folks on the forum more, and often you guys seem to know more that what some rep is supposed to. Ok, Their official response: The Tiguan cannot be towed 4 down. It can be towed on a dolly, but only 30 miles at 30 mph. So, obviously that won't work. Moving on. Thanks y'all

I'm missing something!
The Tiguan is FWD ONLY. Why do the rear wheels care if the front ones are driving or riding on a dolly? They simply follow the front.
There has to be more to this to create the 30miles/30mph limit

The Tiguan does come in an AWD model. We have a 99 Jetta and it tows just fine 2 down. But apparently all new VW's are built in such a way that even the ones with rears down are limited to 30/30. FWD, AWD, Manual, Auto, makes no differece. Anyway, that's per VW. Even though it's all splash lube, no pump etc. Makes no sense to me either but I'm no mechanic. I am sure if I pressed the issue I could find out why, but it was enough for me to look for a vehicle that the manufacturer makes it in a way where it's perfectly fine.
From what I have read, towing some new cars on a dolly messes with the mind of the computer, because it is sensing that the rear wheels are turning but the front wheels are not. Apparently, it takes several (many?) miles of driving to get it retrained.
We are making machines that are too smart for our own good, if that is true!
