Is there a spring or something to replace to bring back the seat belt retractor ?

Mine seams to have gotten a little lazy, does sem to retract all the way all the time. Then it gets caught in the door latch assm when I close the door.

Have a 97 chev regular cab k2500 chevy pickup.

any thoughts etc appreciated.

thanks

If I remember right they used to have a feature on some of the belts that would lock them when they were partially out for use with a child seat. You then have to pull them all the way out to get them to release and wind back up. Maybe someone else can chime in on this.

Seat belts wear out and you might price some at the wrecking yard as I am sure they are the same for many years. I am not sure what year they started the sensor and locking when in a collision. Don't go there. Good luck finding this great safety device.

Maybe i wasn't real clear in the OP.

The seat belt (Driver side) works fine while while driving the truck. When I release it, get out of the truck, then try to close the door, it doesn't retract all the way and sometimes gets stuck in the door latch. In other words I close the door on the belt or the part that inserts into the hold point.

It's possible that the mechanism is "gummed up" with fuzz/lint, and that is causing the belt not to retract properly. Try taking the interior trim off and cleaning it (compressed air?) and lubing the moving parts before replacing it.

You (the seat belt) have reached the end of it's life and is time to replace it. They can not be rebuilt. Pick up a new one from the dealer or buy one from a wrecking yard.

I've never had a new vehicle in my life. 'Shoving' the seat belt up into the slot in the post when you release it will become automatic over time. The retract spring is just tired and needs a hand.

Thanks all for your input.

Just for the heck of it I'm going to take off the cover if I can figure it out, and blow it out as suggested.

If memory servers me right, at the botom of the belt, there is a bar that moves wo lock the belt in place. if they get alot of dust/drit, soda spills on them they can gum up and not work correctly. A goot cleaning may help it.

Just went out to look at taking the cover off.

Pulled the belt all the wayout and "Part" way out I see that the belt was twisted some, the edge partially folded over on the center section of the belt.

Took the twist/overlap out and it seams to retract much better, think I'l give it a try.
