I tip the mailman and I tip any service worker who comes to my house. It could be plumbers, exterminating, landscaper, etc... About 3:30 this afternoon my wife tells me the shower backed up a bit. I called the cesspool company and they had a truck here by 5:30. They had to search for my tanks and then dig up the ground to pump the tanks. They were gone by 6:30, three hours after I noticed the problem. My ground looks as if they didn't dig it up at all and I gave the guy a $20. (To go along with the $1,300 check to the higher ups.lol)

Thanksgiving Eve 2 years ago. I'm busy making food for the next day when my wife complains it's too cold. It's about 7pm on Thanksgiving Eve. I called a company that did some air conditioning work for us and they had someone here within the hour to repair my heat. I gave that dude $40.

I wouldn't hesitate giving a few bucks for the PDI guy if he was knowledgeable and helped us out with our questions. $10 can go a long way.

Yes, that is, IMO, service above and beyond the call of duty, and therfore well deserving of a tip.
Now, if he had said "I'll be open at 0800 tomorrow morning, I'll see you then!"
Well, that is just doing business. No tip.

I am not adverse to tipping for service that was really above and beyond, but I am not tipping for service that is just adequate and what you would expect out of said employee. That's what grinds my gears, when it's expected to tip everyone who did a good job. That should be in their job description at the onset.

I only tip in Restaurants and my hair cutter (cause she is cute) I work in water and wastewater industry for a municipality, I make sure people get water to their house so they can flush a toilet and make sure waste water leaves the house when they flush a toilet, and they clogg up the sewer line, so I deal with their poo. They don't tip me, so why should I tip anyone else. as for the PDI guy, you already pay enough for the purchase of your RV, why does he need a tip it is his job to perform pdi.

Good point but if it is really outstanding by all means tip. We lost a fuel pump late on a Saturday afternoon outside of Collins CO bout 10 yrs back. I managed to sputter the rig off I-70 into the parking lot of a motel. While checking in (since camping was out) we inquired about a local mechanic. She said the best in town is 1/2 block down and dialed the number. He said he was not open on Sunday but had agreed to meet another RV that morning to look at a problem. He said I'll see what I can do. The other RV did not show but he did shortly after 8, diagnosed, ordered part delivered, did the work and we were ready to hit the road by 11:am Sunday morning. This included dropping the fuel tank to access the pump. He burnt 1/2 a Sunday off to help us and the bill was less than I expected for emergency work. I paid that with plastic. We then gave him fifty bucks and told him to have a really good steak dinner than night. That service was well worth the tip.

Greg, In this case, I too would have given him a generous tip. He could have said "I am off on Sundays. I will see what I can do for you on Monday". These type of people go out of their way to help people in distress and deserve to be properly thanked. Sounds like you and I are on the same page when it comes to tipping. Take care.

This is the way I think of it....If the food is bad and the service is good, I tip. If the food is good and the service is bad, I don't.
The same holds true for any service I contract. My PDI person, the same one, has been getting tipped since we bought our first new one in 1997 and we have bought 4. He goes beyond what I consider, "Just the motions."
