David0725 wrote: skip they said we can run all night if we like. but can the gen set handle running for a long time or do I need to let it rest? I think I responded to you previously on something else......if you decide to run it all night, then you'd BETTER be at least 5 miles from me!!!!! Why in heavens name would you consider that long??? We've run one all day --- stupid friend brought his grandson with one of that #@#$@#$@#$ battery operated cars --- the car had to be charged for 8 hours.....then the #$@$#@$ car would make all kinds of noises. To say we told the friend to NEVER do that again is putting it mildly. The generator would run 10-12 hours. So you'd be okay --- but please consider your neighbors. Even if you're boondocking way out away, sounds carry in the wild -- even miles away.

Not recommended to sleep at nite with genset running due to exhaust
gas possibly getting inside, and you never wake up.
Better get, or build one of these genturi things.

The RV generators are good units but not designed for 24/7 for long periods of time. What I mean is that a new well maintained unit could run for days on end but will wear out quicker.
They are dependable and I'm sure that some will step in and say different but I know what a continuious run generator is, GMies and CATs are designed to run forever and all you have to do is add oil and fuel.

His older diesel generator probably has a Kubota engine and while it doe not say GM or CAT it will run 24/7 without making it wear out sooner than the normal 20,000 hours... the same as a CAT.
OP, if fit's hot at night then run it as your neighbors are probably running theirs. Agree with making an exhaust extension for $17 as shown in this post.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

I understand your concerns but the genny is made to run! If you are in a humid area you will need the AC at night in summer or get very hot and damp. Some areas of the country actually cool off and day dry at night but I fully understand those hot steamy southern nights!
We've stopped for a night's sleepy many times dry camping when in a hurry going across country with a parking lot full of coaches with thier gennies running--quite a racket and enough to keep you awake all night! To be considerate to those that cannot sleep through being parked next to that noise all night try to park far away from anyone else.It is hard enough to put up with your own genny running!

That statement is simply not true. These machines, when maintained properly, are in fact designed to run continuously and under load for a very long period of time. It's actually better for the windings and internal seals to be run more than not. The same units are designed for emergency power and often run for days on end in disaster situations. It just happens to be in your RV. Indefinitely? Probably not, but nothing is. But for a few days the machine is designed that it can handle it. The only downside I see is the noise would become obnoxious if I had to listen to it 24/7.

A well maintained generator should run all night without problems but many non inverter style (contractor) generators will lose efficiency when running for long periods of time from the heat generated by their motion. I have noticed this with my Champion generator after 8 or so hours of operation and a slight "pulsing" of a light. I have checked all output and everything seems up to spec. I also use a Yamaha 2400is (several years old) and I have never had this scenario develop even after 12 continuous hours of operation. I follow this practice of running all night for 3-4 day outings at a time but I do not think it would be a good practice for 24/7 full timing.
Before someone decides to flame me, I am running my generators all night on my own property of about 120 acres, without any neighbors.

Aftor Hurricane IKE in Houston I ran my diesel gen set 24/7 for 3 weeks. the neighbors loved it. We had all there refrigs, freezers and fans running from extenson cords.
So I say run it till you run out of diesel. It will not hurt it.
