We have a 2012 Puma 30FQSS with the u-shaped dinette. We have had 4 adults seated at it with no problems. I'm a "large land mammal" and so is my friend who was with us. Both of us are 6 ft tall, and "fluffy" and we and our wives all fit comfortably. We have not had all 4 kids in it yet but I don't see any problems with it in the future. It also has a couch beside the dinette, that will sit 2 adults or 3 kids comfortably. We had a standard dinette in the slide out in the pop up we had and it was a stretch to get the kids in it. Wouldn't trade the u-shaped dinette for nothing now. Good luck!

We have the U shaped dinette now too.. We like the dinette but we hated the fold down table legs.. They make it virtually impossible to seat any more than 2 people comfortably. There is just too much 'mechanism' under there. For $50.00 we replaced them with the two posts.. Much better.
I think for dinettes it more about leg room than anything.

We have a U-shaped dinnette and the table has legs that fold. The booth is OK but the table legs make it a lttle difficult when 4 adults are trying to eat at the table. The nice thing about the table is, we can fold down the legs and use it as a coffee table/foot rest or take the table outside and use it there.
If it were not for the sleeping space, I would take it out and put in a freestanding table and 4 chairs

We eat outside in all but extreme downpours. Have a screen room, I think an 11' square version of this Coleman from Costco. Works great. In 2 years we have eaten once inside due to rain. Occasionally, some of the family will sit down at the dinette to snack or put puzzles together or games.
The size really makes a difference. Some of the U-dinettes I have sat at @ RV shows are about the same size as a traditional one, so you lose legroom and can comfortably seat 2 or 3 people. The tables are similarly small only enough space for two place settings. Take note of the size/space as you shop. They are not all equal.
I thought I wanted a large U-dinette when I shopped for my TT like most of the competitor's version of my floorplan. After 2 years, I end up using the bar counter and storage far more than an extra seat or two. It's a great place to reach inside and set/grab stuff without actually going inside. Since we never wear shoes inside, that helps.

LOVE our U dinette. I prefer sitting outside but with 3 small children (the youngest is 2) sitting around the dinette in our PJs for breakfast is nice.
To the OP:
We bought our TT this spring for the exact reason you stated. 3 children with room to allow one of them to eventually bring a friend along without us being cramped.

We have a U shape dinnette and we prefer it over the older standard dinnette in the old camper. We can easliy fit 5 people around it too. My only issue I have is I can't stand the table. It's a folding type that sits on the bench to make a bed out of it. I really want to buy a center post and be done with it.
Just haven't researched it yet.

I have had both types of dinette. I would say that it depends on their size. There are many variations within each type. Our HTT had a U-dinette that was extremely oversized and could seat at least 6 people (but still had the problem of when a person in the back wants out....everyone has to get up to let them out) My brother has a u-dinette in his new TT and is disappointed at how uncomfortable it is because it is on the small side.
Our new TT has a "super-size" regular booth dinette and we can still fit 6 people (if they aren't extremely large) plus a person at the end. The table is larger than most dinettes and we don't have the problem of our knees hitting each other under the table like with the u-dinette.
I originally thought that the lack of a u-dinette was a deal breaker, but have since realized that it is all about size.

As usual it's all about what YOU decide works better. When we went trailer shopping back in 2010 the U-shaped dinette was one of the features we definitely wanted....until we tried them out in several models we looked at. We personally felt that even though you could sit more than the standard 4 (small children notwithstanding) that you can at the typical table, the table wasn't any bigger so what was the point?
Trying to sit 5 or 6 (or more) there still did not allow the room for plates, cups, silverware, any dishes, etc. that people would be using while eating.
Plus we did not like the way it felt, etc. Again, these were just OUR opinions but that was all that mattered for US. Obviously for a number of people on this thread the U-dinette is great for them and they love it.
So IMHO you need to try the different styles out and decide which you prefer.
