I was wondering if we should replace our tires - Four Winds 5000 Uniroyal tires. They came with the vehicle and are now almost 9 years old, and I know the tire manufactures recommend replacing tires even if the tread is good, once they reach ten years. The RV is not driven as much as our cars and the treads are fine.

Yes, you should replace your tires. It will be much cheaper than the damage from a tire that seperates on the road. I replace my Michelins every six years regardless of how they look or how much tread is left.

Michelins are not required to be replaced for 10 years (unless they require it for some reason other than age). Many people feel more comfortable changing their tires prior to that time, ESPECIALLY if they aren't Michelins. As long as my tires show no cracking, excessive wear and tear, and a Michelin rep approves them, I won't waste my money replacing them for another year and a half (they are 8 1/2 years old now). If I had any other brand I would not wait past seven years to replace them.

I've heard that if you use those tire covers all the time, you don't have to change your tires in 10 years. At least that's what I think I heard.

The set that came on my TT only lasted 4 years before they started cracking. Watch 'em closely. Having one pop while in tow sucks: been there, done that.

Well, speaking of cracks, there is some minor cracking on the sidewalls, not major but they are there near the rim.
The tires have two ployester layers for the sidewalls. Think we can get another year from them? I checked price a new set of six tires will cost about $1,100.00...
I guess we should have bought a set of those vinyl tire covers...we have been talking about it for years...maybe if we buy a pair before our trip and keep them covered for the summer they will be OK?
Do they really help prevent pre mature aging?
We are planning on taking a road trip, about 800 miles..

Lets see 9 years old, cracking around rims most will replace @ 6 years and a 800 mile trip coming that may be a short trip, take along a few extra bucks for the tow. you may well need it

Look on the sidewall of the tire. Also look on Google to show you how to find the "date" of the manufacture of the tire. You may be surprised to find they are over 10 years old...
In my opinion, its better safe than sorry.
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.
