Just a warning for all Toads that have a pump for the Trany. Check you lines at least once every 6 months. Our toad has only been towed for 3 years and yesterday after driving for about 1 hour we pulled in to a drive-up and had a lot of smoke from the engine compartment. Pulled into a parking spot, opened the hood (after feeling for any excess heat). What we found was the fluid line from the pump was leaking on the engine and not only did we have smoke but a small fire. Due to the small amount of fluid I was able to put it out. We still called the Fire Department just to make sure it did not restart.
To make a long story short check your lines carefully. I had been checking mine but not well enough.

Thanks for the cautionary tale. Hopefully the fire (and broken lines) is the extent of the damage, but be on the lookout for internal problems.
And I can assure you that the fire department that responded much prefers being called to a fire that is already out over being called (late) to one that has gotten way out of control.

I am a little confused- fluid on an engine not running. What caused ignition?
I had an underdash fire last month on the I5 I had been having electrical problems with the bottom two fuses of my fuse block. I had had two professional mechanics look at it... Anyway the fuse block caught on fire and was melted. Luckily I had stopped and had a fire extinquisher handy so did not set the whole thing on fire. It was a 98 Tracker and was written off by my insurance company ICBC.
My lesson learned was check your fire extinquishers on a regular basis.
The fire extinquisher available was on a tow truck nearby not the empty one in my coach!!!!

may I add one thing about calling the fire dept after the fact, this is very important in many ways. One big one is it is now there is a record of the fire and if you file an insurance claim for the damage, you will need that claim on file or the insurance companies can deny you reimbursement. and if there is a restart of the fire, better safe than sorry.

The oil was hitting the exhaust and the heat was enough to set it on fire.

I'm confused you were towing for an hour and the exhaust was hot enough to start a fire?

It isn't entirely clear in the OP, but my read of it is that he was driving the toad for an hour before pulling in to the drive-up. I don't picture him pulling in to a drive-up with his Georgie Boy and toad.

Sorry I was driving the toad for about a hour. A drive up is where my DW gets her afternoon Diet Coke.
