We are in a 36 foot class A gasser towing a small Toyota. We are leaving the Mesa Verde area in a few days and traveling to Canyon de Chelley. I just plugged the information in our gps and received a message that six miles of our route will be on dirt roads. (I know, I know... don't believe everything your gps tells you.) However, I do want some input on US 191 south of US 160 in AZ. Thanks for any help.

I do not know of any dirt on 191. Does it say where it is supposed to be.

My Arizona road atlas does not show it either.

The road is really crooked between Clifton and Hannagan Meadow.

The last time I went I went up 77 to Holbrook, I40 to Chambers and then 191 to the Canyon. Was in my 30ft Flair towing a jeep. Went just fine.

I then went north on 191 up to I70 and accross to Salt Lake. There was no dirt. I guess they could have dug some of it up.

Are any of the roads on the route BIA (Bureau of Indian Affairs) roads? Many of them are dirt in places. BIA 13 from US-491 South of Shiprock to Lukachukai (BIA-12) and Tsaile on the way to Chinle used to be dirt over the mountain pass but was paved the last time I drove it in 2007.

I have driven all of US-191 in AZ and don't remember any dirt sections. There is a length restriction between Hannagan Meadow and Clifton as well as a low clearance tunnel and lots of tight turns.

Safe travels!

I first drove on it 1966 from Safford to Alpine, than road a new Gold Wing on it in 1975.It was called 666 which is now 191. It was all paved even in 1966, but Willard told me he took his mother down it with a horse and wagon from Alpine to her sister in Duncan in 1919.It wasn't paved, and not even graveled yet.

Are you asking for fastest or shortest route. Shortest is more likely to include an unpaved section (in this part of the country). That's what my TomTom sticks with 160 and 191 for fastest, and uses that BIA13 for shortest.

If you still have questions, look at subsections of the route. Is the 'dirt' some cutoff, or the last leg in to Chinle?

We drove BIA-13 last fall over Buffalo Pass. Paved all the way, and the curves are not that dramatic. But I would NOT recommend it to folks with a sizable RV. It is very, very steep. We made it over the pass, but by the time we reached the top, we were under 25 and losing speed, first gear, pedal to the metal. On the way down, again in first gear, but necessarily having to use the brakes way too much. When we got to the bottom, we could smell the brakes easily.

I guess there was something to that warning sign below the pass.

From Mesa Verde, CO to Canyon de Chelley, AZ via 160/191 there are no dirt roads. We drove it last fall. Have a great time at Canyon!!! It's a beauty.

P.S. Folks are giving you info on 191 and other roads you won't be traveling on, all the way south from Clifton. You are going nowhere near that.

If you are going 160 to 191 you will be paved all the way.
DO NOT go on any dirt roads on the res with your motor home,no matter what your GPS says. 2gypsies is correct, people are giving you info on 191 that is hundreds of miles south of where you want to go.
