All,

Hello, we've been thoroughly enjoying a Newmar Canyon Star for the past five seasons; however, we think it might be time to switch to a travel trailer. The overhead on the motorhome is obviously high and we're just not using all of it's capabilies. We also just had to buy a new SUV and significantly upgraded our tow capacity, 9k pounds now-so we're able to actually tow something. So, we're looking for something of a similar quality to the Newmar(we've been blown away with the coach), bunkhouse model, and somewhere in the 30-35 foot range. Thanks for any advice or stories!

What is your tow vehicle? That will determine what you can tow. Then people can start tossing out trailer ideas. Good thing about here is everyone has different trailers and can each offer their own insight. You can pick and choose from what to take and leave.

Our former MH was a 2006 Damon Tuscany, 40ft, four slides, diesel/allison, 40 ft with all the toys offered. Sold it for all the reasons you mentions plus a few health issues I had at the time. After the "issues" were resolved we wanted back in to the RV lifestyle & decided on a TT. Purchased a 2011 GMC Yukon Denali, 403 HP & then went on the hunt for a TT around the size that you mentioned. MISTAKE! I should have looked for the trailer first, then bought the tow vehicle. Long story short, traded the Yukon for a GMC 2500 Denali crew cab truck with a diesel/allison. Our trailer is a motor home without the motor, BUT the Yukon fell way short. Don't mean to rain on your parade but a 35ft trailer weighting 9500lbs as our does (Gross) is not within the capability of a SUV. You probably should look for a smaller & lighter trailer & think about a Hensley WD hitch set up. I tried & failed so you can learn by my mistakes. Hope it works out!

We're towing with a Nissan Armada SL, looking at some of the Evergreen models in the 34ft range and look to be about 7500 pounds loaded. Thanks!

We have a 33' Flagstaff that we tow with a Chevy 3500 dually diesel/allison crew cab. This combination works well and the dually rear wheels significantly controls side to side sway. I tow at 65 mph and it like the TT is not there.

Are you looking for single bunks or double bunks?

Also what type of vehicle specifically, it can make a huge difference on what people will suggest to you as some will "push it" and others will be "more conservative".

4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

Shawn, I have an Evergreen Everlite 33QB, and tow it with my 2011 Yukon XL Denali. I couldn't be happier, the Everlite is around 7600 loaded. They are great trailers. I use the Equalizer hitch that I set up myself, the dealer setup was poor at best I had a lot of sway until I redid th setup on the hitch, now it tows great.

It's your decision but I wouldn't... Driving down to Ft Hood last Friday I met the head of a storm with head winds strong enough that within a 1/4 mile stretch they ripped my awning off the side of the TT and tossed it into the ditch along I-35, and it also blew a huge hole through my plastic propane tank cover... MPG would've been alot worse with a 7k-lbs TT.

Wifey is wanting a bigger TT, I'm limiting the weight limit to 6500-lbs MAX... So she's now shopping Ram 3500 Cummins Megacabs to trade in our little Murano for because she wants to get a 8500-lbs TT and keep the Armada.
