That is awesome! When I read pearls like this I can hardly believe it comes at no charge to us. Thanks for mingling with us little people.

Great answer Two Jayhawks. These kind of responses from jauguston is why some members never post a question. The OP never mentioned not being able to afford to run the AC. He just wanted to know how much it cost. As far as any of us knows, the OP may be a multimillionaire. Enough said.

In reality, there is no known answer unless research is done in a controled, protected, enviroment. One can drive a thousand miles and come up with a answer for that trip and then do the exact same trip two weeks later and come up with a different answer. To the OP, it may not be a stupid question, but if the OP were to think about it for a while his thoughts concerning it may change. And I do agree with Jim - if one worries about this a lot, well, RVing may not be for them. But some RV differently than I do. I figure trips of over a thousand miles one way, while others just travel a couple miles to a local campground. And just cause I travel the distances I do does not make me a millionaire ro a multimillionaire. I'm a retired Teamster Union truck driver and on fixed income, and my union pention isn't as big as many would like to think it is!!

Filled the tank this morning drove 204 miles. Filled the tank before we stopped at the RV park. Got 6.3 MPG Average MPG over 40,000 miles when not using AC is 8.3. Had AC on all day in 100 degree temps. A lot of small hills all day. That is a 2 MPG drop from AVG NOT USING AC. That drop even surprised us as it usually is 1 MPG drop. Must have been more hills than we realized.

Guys,

I really hate to see a "one tank average" used for anything meaningful.

A 1 percent difference in the grade of the pavement were you are filling up can make a reasonably significant difference.

Though I record every gallon that goes in our coach, I only calculate AVERAGE on 2000+ mile segments. Tank to tank varies pretty widely-- based more on fill than differences in MPG. Our summer trip averges (with dash A/C)/winter MPG does not vary by over .2 MPG.

Are you diesel or gas? The OP asked how running the AC effected a Gas Smaller Class A engined motor home.

One should never ask questions concerning money
on the classA forum.

Last early Spring on a trip down to So. Cal. on Hyway 395 we hit a very violent wind storm and had to stop driving at Independence, CA and pulled into The Ft. Independece Travel Plaza to spend the night and dry camp until the wind passed in the morning. At 5:00pm I filled the diesel tank to its absolute fullest at the station and pulled into a flat spot with some 18 wheelers. The temperature dropped to 29 degrees that night and I ran two 1,500 watt electric heaters on full all night until 6:00am the following morning. We ran the water heater and the fridge on propane all night as they had been on propane when we were driving. The 7,500 watt QD diesel generator ran for 13 hours and in the morning I was curious as to how much diesel I had used. I pulled into the same island/pump I had used the day before and filled up the fuel tank to exactly the same level at 5:00pm the day before. I took exactly 8.5 gallons of diesel or .65 gallons per hour. My generator had approximately 400 hours on it.

Doesn't answer your air conditioning/gas generator question but I thought some may find this germain and interesting.

Excellent!! This the only way to calculate usage. Thanks for the input.

Nothing is either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

I'm betting we'll never know as he has not returned, nor provided a profile.

You can blame the responses for driving people off, but I think it's more likely this post is trolling.

As for the question, the cost, compared to the actual fuel used, is negligible.
