I want to take a month long trip out west, western states . With the price of gas ,would it be cheaper to take the Honda civic or my class A motor home with a 460 engine. The price of motels might be costly as well. Might go as far as Oregon. Thanks for any help.

By the time you pay for motels and eating out all the time it won't cost much more to take the MH. JMHO

You have to sit down and crunch the numbers. Mileage on the Honda vs the Class A and figure in housing and what ever extra eating out you'll be doing. With driving around and such you are probably talking about 5000-6000 miles at a minimum.

A lot of variables here. Only you can do the math. What price motels are you planning to stay in? What type of meals do you plan to eat? Gas mileage and costs for the Civic? All this compared to what this same items will cost for the MH.

You are trying to compare apples and oranges. Rving is a different lifestyle than riding in a car and going from hotel to motel. If you want to get out and stay in the sights you will see then RVing is the way to go. You never have to worry about the hotel being sold out; 30 feet and you can be in bed. You have the freedom and expense saving of cooking on board. Campfires out west are frowned upon in hotel rooms. You have to decide what will work for you. Yes it will cost you more in gas towing but your honda civic also requires gas too. Good luck with your decision. We never regretted taking our kids in the RV out west when they were 14. It was great!

Gas for the MH will clearly be 3x over the Honda. I'd guess that food and hotel expenses for a full month would be more expensive than taking the MH. You can boondock or drycamp a few days here and there to reduce expenses.

The 460 was always known as a super sucker on gas, and it's a long way from Tennessee to Oregon. You only have a month so figure out your miles that you need with 1/4 of the days that you do not drive.

Maybe you should look into flying there, and renting a rig. Paying for a little extra baggage on the plane might be a better option and landing in San Francisco and driving a whole lot less in a modern rig might even save you money and keep you closer to the parts you want to visit. The State Parks in Oregon are to die for, so much better than being in the towns in a busy motel.

What is the reason you bought the RV? To drive a Honda on a long trip? The cost of gas may be high, but if you figure the difference of the current gas price to say a year ago the difference may be .50 / gal. If your motorhome gets 8 MPG and your trip is 4800 miles R/T then that is 600 gal of gas. With a .50 differential in price that amounts to an additional $300.

Me I will take the RV as I will be in much nicer places and eat (and drink) better!

Remember if you take the MH you can't count the cost of food. If you were home you still need to eat. However if you go out to eat every time then you have to count the cost to eat.

I've been out West multiple times. I'll tell you, there is nothing like staying in one of the parks (Rocky Mountain, Arches, Grand Tetons, etc), sitting out under the stars at night with a campfire, and just relaxing in a clean bed (no bed-bugs) ..... that, for me, is more than worth the price of gas to bring my home-on-wheels out West.
