Hello -

We have a Trail Cruiser C21RB that we've owned for about 6 years and love it! We tow with our Toyota 4runner. We want to carry 3 large bikes and 1 small (toddler) bike. We tried connecting a bike rack to the bumper, but lost the whole thing (bumper and bikes) while driving. Fortunately, we were on a rural road and caused no accidents. Last year, we just put all our bikes inside the trailer while driving, which worked ok, but not very convenient.

Does anyone have a suggestion for mounting a bike rack onto our vehicle or hitch? We've seen some racks between the vehicle and trailer. If anyone has used this method, or has any other ideas, we'd be interested in your thoughts.

Thank you,
Debra

We've had the same 4 bike Yakima Roof top mount thru 6 different Tow Vehicles so far...easiest way and safest/most secure way to carry 4 bikes...up and out of the way...locked to the vehicle.

Get a roof rack for the 4Runner. Yakima and Thule make great rack sytems.

Sorry you missed the hundreds of posts warning of the all to common failure of bumper mounted bike racks.

You could search this Forum for `bike rack' and read what has already been posted.

I used to tow with a 4Runner and ran into the same problem. There is a front mount hitch available for the 4Runner, you could put your rack up front. Another option is to use your roof rack but I find that harder than putting them in trailer. There is also a rack available that mounts to the a-frame on the front of the trailer over the propane tanks. You could also mount a reciever on the back of the trailer again. It can be done safely but not with the bumper. To do that you need to weld up to the frame and beef it up. You also need to take the slack out so the rack fits tight in the reciever and doesn't bounce. I had a hole drilled into the reciever and a nut welded on so I could thread a bolt in to tighten against the rack. No more slop, and no more problems.

my rv dealer sells an extension for the hitch. its basically two hitch receivers stacked on top of one another. you plug it into your hitch receiver so you can pull a camper with the bottom receiver and plug a receiver type bike rack into the top receiver. hope thst makes sense.

Slate -- any picture of this mounted on your truck? I have an extended cab and am concerned that the length of the roof is not long enough to spread the rack's attachment points (to the rails) for the most stable / secure arrangement. This is the rack I might consider getting.
