To clarify, those years were the change over years. Of course these dates are by year and approximates depending on supplies.

1998 Pxx chassis were built by GM came with 7.4 Liter (Chevy 454 engines)
1999 Pxx chassis were built by Workhorse with 7.4 Liter(Chevy 454 engines)
2000 Wxx chassis were built by Workhorse with 7.4 Liter(Chevy 454 engines)
2001 Wxx chassis were built by Workhorse with 8.1 Liter(GM engines)

The 2000 and newer Wxx chassis had the problem brakes built by Bosch.

Why would you take the Ford V-10 over the 454 or 8.1 GM powertrain?
This is what OP would like to know.

I drove both the Ford and Chevy of the mid 90s. In stock form they were the same... except the ford you needed to put your foot through the floorboard to get on a highway.
Either coach that old is going to need significant repair or maintenance. The chevy really wakes up with cold air and headers/3" single exhuast. Thats less than a grand. Coupled with the 4l80E trans... you can run 65 on the highway and get around 8mpg towing or not.

The better engine is the one that is/will be in the MH parked in the driveway.

They each have their problems and strengths. Chose the MH that is in the best shape, no leaks, well maintained and has the floor plan that you like. I think you will be happy with either on of them.

The 99 Ford chassis came out with some great improvements, which in my opinion made it the better choice, not just the engine, but the whole package. However I would choose one in the 2000 or later when they increased the horsepower some.
Also, the two previous post to mine gave excellent advice.
