I have a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab Z71 with the 5.3L, 3.42 rear end, 6 speed and HD trailering package. I am currently kicking around the idea of buying (not real serious at the moment) one of these "1/2 towable toy haulers." Would only be pulling trailer at the most once a month about 100 miles from house.

My truck specs are as follows:
Pay load capacity (yellow sticker) 1,509 lb
GVWR (tag on door) 7,000 lb
FGAWR 3,950 lb
RGAWR 3,950 lb
Maximum Trailer Weight 9,500 lb
GCWR 15,000 lb
Hitch capacity 600 lb; 1,100 lb (WD)

I would be hauling a Polaris RZR XP 900. Not real sure about weight due to the accessories that I have added, lets just say 1,500 lb and it would just be me and my wife (380 lb).

Here is the trailer that kind of peaked my interest that I seen at a local dealer.

2012 Dutchmen Razorback 2150
Hitch weight (dry) 840 lb
Unloaded Weight (dry) 6,088 lb
Acu-Weight Certificate on side of trailer 6,402 lb
GVWR 9,500 lb

Whats the deal with these Acu-weight certificates on the trailers is that a legitimate weight for the trailer as it sits (no fuel or water)?

Am I looking at this wrong in saying that even the forementioned 1/2 ton towable toyhauler would probably exceed my payload capacity of my truck? I know if I just base it on GVWR I would have a hitch weight of about 1,235 lbs. Hell with me and my wife in the truck plus full tank I could only have an available payload of about 985 lbs, meaning a max trailer GVWR of about 7,500 lbs so as to not exceed the trucks payload. Am I think this through right??

I am starting to think I need to go in another direction than a toy hauler. Whats yall opinions?

Thanks
Scott

You should be fine with a TH around the 23 ft range of smaller. Most limiting factor will be the 5.3, I have one in my suburban, you will not want to be doing any steep grades.

The biggest problem I see, is the Tranny.
NONE of the 1/2 ton trucks have enough tranny to handle the rated capacities. I know of at least 3 friends who have smaller T H's and suffered trans failures. A good cooler and a gauge will help, but you must watch the temps when pulling a grade and adjust accordingly.
Even My 2500 HD diesel/allison will get too warm on some grades, I slow down and make sure the temps get back to a reasonable level rather than suffer the consequences. Better to be late than not make it !!

Good Luck

I have a 2009 Silverado with the 5.3L and tow package(tranny cooler). It has similar ratings. I tow a trailer in the 4500 pound range. I would not want to pull much more. The truck may handle it, but pushing speeds around 65 is enough work on the truck with the set up I have. Being that you are only going 100 miles, you could probably get away with it though. Just plan on taking your time.
Good Luck!

The problem with 1/2 tons is payload and tongue weight as you seem to understand. Do your research and don't make a bad decision because you will hate it and end up spending even more money

I'm not the weight police on GVWR yea you can pull it get some air bags. By the time you load it all up you'll be over the GVWR weight. It's just not your wife's you half to weight it's all the stuff you put in it. Including water how big is the fresh water tank? 1 US Gallon of water = approx. 8.35 lb

My old truck was a 2500HD with the 6.0 gasser... I destroyed that truck dragging about 12K around behind it...

I upgraded to a 3500HD so I could comfortably tow a toy hauler designed to go behind a 2500HD... I will probably end up overloading the 3500 and needing a few mods!

I have a 03 GMC Z71(5.3) and tow a 2012 MVP 18ss(overall length of trailer minus tongue is 20 ft)with no problems(4500 lbs dry).I do run a K&N cold air intake with a Flowmaster cat back dual exhaust and a set of Firestone air bags.I take my time gettin' where I'm goin'(60mph) and haul around 5500 lbs loaded.Seems to wrok good for me.I would stay away from a trailer weighing more than 5000 lbs dry.

If you are asking about trailers. look at KZ MXT line. They Have some
with a 7000 GVWR.
