Filmed to the tune: Wolf Creek Pass by CW McCall going west to east.

Youtube

When we went down it a couple years ago it was about an hour before dark and raining hard when we started up, and full dark and still raining when we got to Pagosa Springs. Certainly a white knuckled trip.

The song was written before they rebuilt the road, thus that reference to going thru the tunnel on the way down. It wasn't actually a tunnel but some overhead cover associated with the railroad from what I've heard.

Any other Wolf Creek Pass stories or ones about equally steep road sections?

Beautiful pass.
20 years ago i was into boats (I know, I never learn) and we were pulling up with a 22' boat towed by a Dodge Ram 3/4T . We passed this Nissan Pathfinder towing a 1 axle bayliner (what else) going up. So we get to the top, I gear way down and we just putter down.
The Nissan flies by me going downhill.

On the west side there's a NASTY set of 15-20mph hairpins.

We found the Nissan at the bottom pulled over, smoke POURING from the brakes. Hmmmmm

I just geared up and rolled on.

Wolf Creek is actually one of the more tame mountain passes in Colorado. Two lanes up and one down and only moderate grades. It has long been used by truckers passing through the state but got more business before the Interstate system was in place. Pretty drive from either direction.

Went through Wolf Creek Pass in '77 when the road was under construction and the East slope was gravel all the way up.

Also, there were no guard rails which made it rather interesting.

Looks like they were travelling east to west to end up in Pagosa Springs. Nice trip with a 5er too!

I like that road, and agree that it is one of the tamer CO passes. Usually I even manage to stay in one lane while driving it. :-) I thought I would have motion sickness before your video was finished!

On my first trip it was paved, but still had the "tunnel" snow shed and all the twisty turns. We were driving a 1960 Ford sedan with a 3-speed stick on the column and towing a small TT. More recent trips, with the Allison 6-speed geared down and C.W.'s tune playing on the CD, have been more pleasant. It was snowing on top last time, in July.

It is even a more enjoyable drive (for everyone) when one picks a lane and stays in it!

Just came over Wolf Creek pass a little over a week ago pulling our Spree TT. Took it real slow and easy up and then down. Love the drive, have made it numerous times just driving or pulling our pop-ups and now our TT.
