An avid boondocker in Mexico we are looking to take a three week trip along the Texas coast. From what I have read, many of the Texas coastal state parks offer primitive sites at a reasonable rate.
However, I would really like to boondock as close to the gulf as possible but not on the sand (still not confident enough for that).
I have read about Bird Island Basin and Malaquite Beach. What else is there along the route from SPI heading east?
I'm sure we will hit a couple of Walmarts along the way. We are leaving next Wednesday.
Besides Bird Island Basin (calm, great view, fairly tight quarters) and Malaquite (a bit more space, close to beach but not on sand, cold water facilities), there is Port Aransas, where you can confidently pull right out onto the sand. Pick a spot near the inlet, where the beach is wide. There is a nominal fee, if you don't mind that, and I think parking is restricted to three days at a time.
Port A is a fun town, that may be pretty sleepy this time of year, now that the Winter Texans are Summer New Mexicans.
If you make it all the way east you can check out Sabine Pass. When we stayed there last year it was free, but last I heard they've now started charging a $10/night fee. Right by the ocean. Paved parking plus you can drive onto the sand. It's very close to the border with LA.
Once Texas Two Steppers mentioned the heat I started checking state parks. I have been to all of them in the state (those with rv sites) except for the Piney Woods area. I know that to avoid the high cost of entrance fees you can purchase an annual pass. But now I am reading that there is a 2 dollar per person "activity fee". Is that for rvers as well as the entrance fee and rv site fee?
Because of that, I have also started checking rv parks with weekly rates. I don't want to stay too long in one place but if need be I would to take advantage of the weekly rates. Passport America is only good Mon - Thurs.
Aargghh, I'm about ready to just head to Veracruz. Any advice would be appreciated. BTW, I'm not planning on boondocking because of cost but because I want to get away from things as much as possible, I want to do some serious reading for one.

Heck - Check into a park in the Rio Grande Valley. With all the Snow Birds gone, they'll be giving the sites away and it will be very, very quiet.
