Owners manual says I should change the fluid and filter 24 months or 15,000 miles. Allison 6 speed transmission.

I have done it on schedule that last two times. Does it really need change that two year period? I only put 5,000 on it the last couple of years.

Thanks

Large part of the equation depends on whether you are running Dexron or Transynd:

Click on your transmission family for Allison recommended service intervals.

And Allison can do a used oil analysis on your oil to see how well it is holding up. Probably cost you 15 or 20 bucks.

I use Amsoil. Per Amsoil website: SERVICE LIFE
Recommended for 50,000 miles in severe service* and 100,000 miles in normal service;* or per vehicle manufacturer-recommended intervals, whichever is longer.

*As defined by vehicle or transmission manufacturer

X2 on getting your fluid tested if you think you need to change it.

If you are still under warranty I would follow what Allison recommends for their service intervals. I would also not use Amsoil, which is not an approved replacement for Transynd oil. It may work just fine but since it is not approved by Allison, why take a chance with your warranty? If your transmission is out of warranty, then service intervals, and fluid choices, are all your choice and responsibility.

I agree. Allison has a list of approved "Transynd-like" products. Choose from one of the approved fluids.
