FishOnOne wrote: Congrats.... I'm sure you won't be dissapointed with it's towing ability. The problems with the 6.0 psd are now well understood and with some simple steps taken can lead to many trouble free miles.
1. Use only Motorcraft oil and fuel filters (No aftermarket filters... period!)
2. Go to a Ford dealer and have the latest flash installed on the truck (cost is ~ $100). This flash will monitor your engine oil temperature (EOT) and your engine coolant temperature (ECT) differential.
3. Change oil every 5k miles using ONLY Motorcraft oil filters and CJ4 API rated diesel oil. If you live in a cold climate you may consider using a 5w40 synthetic oil.
4. Change fuel filters every 15k miles using ONLY Motorcraft fuel filters.
5. Don't let your batteries get weak to the point the truck will barely start. Weak batteries can kill the FICM module.
6. Add a coolant filter (optional). Very cheap and innexpensive modification. (i.e. Sinister coolant filter)
7. It's time to change your coolant using a Ford approved coolant if it hasn't already been done. I use Ford Gold coolant for the record every 50k miles and distilled water.
7. Enjoy many years of service from your truck.
If he has a 2005 he has a 6.0.
I agree with everything but the Ford coolant. That is what plugs up the oil cooler and blows head gaskets.
Drain and refill your coolant with Cat ELC coolant and add that coolant filter. If you can, get rid of the EGR system. A delete kit will cost around $120 and another $200 to delete it. Money well spent.
I also strongly agree with using only Motorcraft filters. They have a patent on the design and ony they will totally filter your oil.
Also, get a Scanguage II and set it to monitor the oil, water and trans temps. Very important. The dummy gauges will only tell you when its ready to blow.
I have a 2007 6.0 and have spent hundreds of hours on diesel forums to try and over come the 6.0 problems. My truck now has 186,000 miles and runs like new. Good luck!

I think he is talking about the VT365
Congrats OP
Guppy covered it really well. Keep up the service.
The coolant filter Mod is also sound advice.
Sounds like another $200 no proof oil change to me. At least the walls of text are gone!

Congrats on the truck. As for the coolant question, I wrote a little document on flushing the cooling system in the 6.0. I tried to explain as best that I can what is happening with the 6.0 and the cooling system, and tried to dispel some of the myths about it as well. It's really critical to keep the cooling system maintained regardless of coolant used. I have switched to ELC and have had VERY positive results. In any event, you need to flush the cooling system, reverse flush the oil cooler (it's not hard) and enjoy!

Ok - I'll be brief - have a co-worker with a 6.0 Ford diesel - he knows of the issues out there but has never had a problem with his.
