If they are going to be looking for Walmarts on the fly, make sure that they have the Road Atlas that shows the Walmart locations or a GPS or SmartPhone App that lists them and gives directions.

Unlike campgrounds, lodging, fuel and food services; in my experience Walmarts are not listed on the "Blue Signs" at highway exits and they are often not visible from the highway. Most times the only indication may be the listing of the Murphy USA fuel station if there is one.

Safe travels!

We have stayed in Walmart and Sam's lots many times. Safety doesn't seem to be the issue, keeping 4 kids happy cooped up in a RV would be. They are convenient, nice to swing in and top off the groceries, save your black water tank, etc. That said, they are also sometimes noisy and very lighted at night, sometimes making sleep difficult. If money is not the issue, with four kids, I would look for a campground with amenities. Stop early enough in the day to get a CG, I suspect the kids will be ready to anyway. You can always find a Walmart as a last resort.

There is a link on the walmart web site listing locations that will let you stay overnight. Remember that it is for a quick overnight and not a campground. Don't put out your awning, lawn chairs and stuff.

I always ask the manager on duty if there is a problem staying, he/she will usually direct you to the area that they would like you to park. Even if there are other campers already parked I ask. We have never had a problem spending the night, sometimes it gets noisy.

We've done it often. It was always safe. Our kids liked to window shop the WM aisles then read a book and sleep.

I think an available WM is safer than driving tired to reach a destination. As a concerned DH myself I can sympathize. For sure they should have a few cell phones ready with batteries charged - both in the WM and on the road.

I thought this one needed repeating.

We've done it(one nighters) perhaps 20 times over the past 5 or more years and really have never had any problems. But there are only 2 of us and I wouldn't let the kids be running around the parking lot. I prefer not to do it in large urban areas but have once or twice and only problem was someone walking through the lot swearing loudly at no one.

That's not a walmart site. That was the point.
