We're taking our fifth wheel to the U.S., then the Canadian Maritimes. We're looking for a good solution to cell and internet service. Also want to access the internet from an iPad and laptop. I see lots of ideas here for U.S. travellers, but any ideas for something that works in both U.S. and Canada? We already have a smart phone from Bell and assume roaming charges would apply for that. Any internet solutions?
Thanks!!

Assuming your phone is a hotspot, talk to Bell and see if they will set up a plan.

We can probably do that, but were hoping for a less expensive way.
Last year in Europe, we were able to purchase a stick for the internet, for 90 days. Not sure if companies here offer anything similar on a short-term basis, and if so, would it work in both Canada and the U.S.

the only less expensive way is to buy a air card/modem stick from one of the pay-as-you-go usa vendors for use in usa only
virgin
mellenicom
etc..
neither country as a service provider that covers both countries cheaply
Options, always have options, and the journey goes much smoother

I guess when in Canada you could use your phone.

Be very careful with a smart phone as they use data all the time. My friend went into Canada and his phone racked up over $200 in data over in a day or two. This is without him actually using the phone.

When in the US, a credit card with a US billing address is required for many service providers. I use a reload-able Visa purchased from 7-11.

Be very careful crossing into the US, double check that you have the right plan. We set everything up to go down, and were assured that it was. 6 days into the trip, we got a call from Telus saying that we should have a data roaming plan and that to that point we owed 2013.00. When I told them that we had a plan set up, he said he could not see it. They did credit it back and only charged the fee that would have been with a plan. We then went and bought a Verizon Wifi and were extremely happy for the rest of the trip. The roaming charges from the US have sky rocketed, as I'm sure the ones from Canada have. Just be very careful of the plans you get. Macktee

I use a windows lap top, public free hotspots or camp ground wifi and a magic jack. Free calls anywhere in North America, answering service and a bunch of other services. Great system.
