Suggest you look into a "USED" Thousand Trails membership. See if that is an attractive alternative to you.
We spend from Oct to May in southern AZ and CA and don't spend a dime for camping. NOT A DIME.
With the Thousand Trails membership during that time, we spend a week drycamping in Quartzsite and two different weeks drycamping in Yuma.
Examine using COE camping if you are old enough to have the Golden Geezer discount.
Membership campgrounds aren't for everyone....you have to be in a place to utilize them to their fullest, then its a no brainer.

I suggest you dont look at ANY 1000 Trails Membership. Its a bottom dealing rip off and nothing more.
If your touring look into Nation Forest CG's...many have 30 amp electric MINIMUM and more and more are going to 50 amp. I know of 3 in the west that the wife and I could easily spend a week each in and costs are in the neighborhood of $18-20 a night...electric included. All the nights you spend in them helps average out the "nicer"..??...CG's where you have to shell out $50 to $70 at.

Would like to go where I want and save a little than go elsewhere and save a lot.
That's the million dollar questions. We use 7 day stays where it's practical and not worry about the rest, using GS. I don't use "Camping Clubs", as we want to plan our route where we want to go, not based on where the campground is.

As I've Matured... I've learned that artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity.
Passport America , Golden Age Pass , and boonedocking wherever it appears safe . As I travel to events around the country , I use my coach like it was designed - it is self contained as are most RV's . I use gasbuddy.com to show current fuel prices and plan fuel stops accordingly . By not using Flying J , I save about $600 per year .
For longer stays and leisure I often use ACE , military , city , county , or state areas .
By using RV Park Reviews , RV Blogs , and reading sites like RV.NET , I can get an idea of what is available in each area of the country .
I have trip planning notes that go back 10 years that I constantly update , and I also have an old fashioned paper atlas map book and a 2011 Exit Now that I update .
Be creative , Slow the pace , and enjoy the journey !
About larger than 36 ft units in State park camp grounds. A lot of them use to be limited and perhaps a lot still are. We have found many in La, Tn, Tx etc that would handle larger units.
However I don't know the total availability. We have not been exploring them all that long. We drove through several this year to see what they would handle.
We use 1000 Trails, about $1300 in 1998, dues 500 a year, for 50 nights and $5 a night afterwards, Passport America, Moose, Elks, VFW, Legion,COE,when we were on the road 9 months a year found that our costs weren't that high, overnight at WalMart or Sams, find when we are out west using our 1000 Trails going park to park is well worth it, have found very few w/o adequate power . We don't have to have 50 amp but it's nice.We like parks with pools and activities. Since Equity Lifestyles bought TT, there are many more parks to stay in with a Thousand Trails discount(lots of Encore parks offer it)we have used county parks and fairgrounds. Have found some state parks do not police the rowdy crowd, use them on week days. Happy Trails
Seems like yesterday a Motel 6 was $30 a night. Now a parking space with hookups is $30-50 a night...
Normally we stay at state parks, which seem to be cheaper. I 2nd the freecampsite idea. Also, I think staying at walmart for a few hours sleep is always a nice perk to the store. Plus you can go buy some stuff while you are there to resupply.
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.
