You will be much happier if you get your favorite heavier trailer and use the 2500 to tow it than going all the way down to a hybrid and towing with the suburban. Let the in- laws follow in their own vehicle... heck let them get their own tent or trailer. We let my mom come along once and while my mom is a very benign MIL for my DH, it was still enough for us to know to limit what family tags along and we have a 30ft TT w/ super slide and just a family of 3. That said, the older 2500 is a much more capable tow vehicle for those cross country trips. Having been pushed down a steep grade in a 1/2 ton SUV that was completely set up to tow and even had the prodigy P3 in it, I will never go back to towing w/ a 1/2 ton, especially an SUV. I was over 2000 lbs under the max tow rating but still managed to be over on payload. It makes a world of difference.

There are more weight ratings to consider than just the "towing capacity" or GCWR.

You also need to consider the TV's GVWR and rear Gross Axle Weight Rating. And we need to know the maximum allowable weight of "occupants and cargo" as specified on the sticker on the driver's door or door pillar.

It is quite common for a candidate TT to have a weight which is within the TV's "towing capacity" while producing loads which will cause the TV's GVWR and/or rear GAWR to be exceeded -- especially if you're carrying four adults and three children in the TV.

heres another thought. I trade my 2500 crew truck in for a 2500 series express passenger van. It has a higher tow capacity and higher GVWR than my 1500 suburban. From what I read this should be an adequate tow vehicle. Any real world experiance with this?

Check the payload on the four sticker. Many on here seem to be happy with their vans towing. I think you will probably be happier with the van than the burb. I have no personal experience with the van. I towed w/ a 1/2 ton suv before my truck and can tell you it was a night and day difference.

Do a search on here for jjbirish and LarryJM both of them tow w/ a van and can probably give you some good insight.

This is a much more viable solution as the 2500 van will give you more payload that you need and a higher tow capability. You are doing this the right way by listening to the wisdom of many years experience and not getting frustrated with our negative feedback. If your towing trips are short, I recommend driving two vehicles. If not, then a more cpable TV (3/4+ ton van, Burb). would be the way to go.
