We have never tried CB in the USA -- we have never felt the need, and I have heard that the air is cluttered with off-color chatter from truckers.

What do you think about CB in remote parts of BC? Is there adequate reception to make it useful? Is it necessary? Are their fewer foul-mouthed truckers?

If the consensus is that we need CB, are there small handheld units that will do the job? I would prefer not to clutter up my dashboard with extra stuff, unless I have to.

Thanks in advance for your advice!

Live and RV in BC, have a CB and never use it.

The only time it might be useful would be driving on logging roads, but we have done that for 30 years without a CB. Plus we do not know the call locations.

Anyone know where Chicken Joes is?

Yeah..I agree with Tothill. I have a cb on-board and I don't think I have used it once in BC. You'll find spotty cel coverage too.

The interesting language from the truckers is on the LAD channels now. VHF/UHF? It's late and I can't remember which one or what the frequencies are. I listen in to know what the roads are like and where the county mounties are. I also get to learn new words sometimes.

Haven't seen a CB in a loooong time. I wouldn't invest in one. JMHO

A CB is only good to have if you are traveling in a group for a long distance. Easy and cheap, but useless for anything else.

CB is almost usless unless you are just talking between rigs while traveling. VHF with a good antenna is mabey 20 miles with a clear line of sight. Sat phone is the way to go if you want reliable comunitcatoin to the outside world from remote locations.

That's assuming you're in range of a cell tower, which is only the case near the larger cities along the Alaska Highway in Canada and to a lesser extent in Alaska.

But back to the original question, we took a CB radio with us on our journey last summer and never turned it on. There's enough traffic on the highway that if you have a problem with your vehicle, someone will be sure to stop and offer assistance. Travelers along the highways in that part of the world, whether tourists or locals, seem much more willing to stop and help than down here in the lower 48. But as someone else mentioned, if you're traveling with a group, a CB might make conversation between vehicles more convenient, although many people use the little FRS walkie talkies for this.

And no, you don't need a VHF at $4-$500.

I think CB's died at least 20 years ago.
