We are getting ready to head to Yellowstone from Raleigh, NC. The first leg takes us through Indianapolis using the following roads through VA and WV:

-I77/64 into Charleston, WV
-64 to 35N
-35 runs with 817 for a bit
-35 pretty much rest of the way to I70

How are these roads? I am not at all familiar with 35/817. Hilly? Slow? Traffic?

Is there a better routing choice?

Thanks

Greetings;

I speak only about what I know. We just drove I 70 thru Indianapolis - heading home from Texas. The part of I-70 east of Indy was compared to other road surfaces we travelled - rough. Chippy pavement, single lanes because of road construction. Hopefully it'll be fixed, with reconstruction completed before you reach there. Have a safe trip.

As one who travels to Williamsburg from Cincinnati pretty often, I'll tell you my secret route as long as you don't tell anybody. Its the same 630 miles, but you go thru no little towns and no significant hills or traffic.
Stay on I-64 to exit 172(Grayson). North on Rt.7 for 3/10 mi. to left on Rt. 9.
Route 9 has no towns, no traffic and is 3 lanes wide. Nothing steep. It intersects with I-275W south of Cincinnati. Take I-275W (again, very little traffic) all the way to I-74 towards Indy. Go around Indy on I465W to pick up I74W again.
Just don't get near Indy on May 27th. (Indy 500 race)

Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

We travel from Triangle area to north Indianapolis to visit son and family and they travel here....and both of us typically use I-77 to I-64 to Lexington area & I-75 to Cincinnati and then the 475 (or whatever is the circle around to west Cincinnati) to I-74 to Indianapolis. It's a fairly pleasant drive.

For some years we lived where I-70 was our only real route from N WV to Indianapolis and we really were fed up with the very heavy truck traffic on I-70.

The Route 35 has been widened since we last drove it but there was a long (hour?) section which was very heavily traveled and truck traffic and people trying to pass where they shouldn't, etc. I think there is less of the two-lane now so that is surely better. It's a pleasant drive through Ohio but then you have to wade through some congested area before getting to I-70 and then dealing with stressful driving on I-70 from there so we haven't used that route lately.

We've heard that the Route 9 option picked up in KY which another poster described is a good selection but haven't tried it.

Have a great trip! We're heading west early July.
