anyone visited, traveled, camped etc. a lot in North Dakota? Considering doing some traveling there this summer. We like to do lots of boondocking, scenic drives etc.. any recommendations on places enjoyed?
We've been to Teddy Roosevelt NP a couple times. The landscape is a lot less spectacular than South Dakota. They have a lot of critters and the park is OK but I doubt it will make anyone's top ten list.

I just had to laugh...then I realized you were actually serious. While we were driving through the area my wife remarked "you can see the edge of the world and we are going to fall off".
Honestly there is little to see. Western South Dakota, yes. North Dakota, not so much.
2008 F350SD V10 with an 2012 Arctic Fox 29-5E When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.
We just drove US 2 through North Dakota and Montana. Flat farmland for the most part. Between Minot and Williston most of the fracking is being done. It is a dust bowl. Trucks are flying down the road, spewing dust and kicking up rocks. When you get close to one of their small towns, it looks like a mini dust storm covering it. Very dirty and quite unhealthy I imagine.
We made it through to Montana ok, but the trucks were still flying through and a LARGE rock hit the windshield, crushing a fist-sized area. We had to stop and have the windshield replaced.
I'm glad we had the experience, but we don't feel the need to do it again.
We remarked on the locals - they have to be very special people to live here. Very tiny towns very far apart, lots of open land and few folks. Plus the winters. I couldn't do it. We are more mountain and hill people.
P.S. NOT knocking North Dakota or Montana, just letting you know what part to avoid. They have great lakes and fishing and parks. Just avoid US 2.

That is what is so great about MT, SD, ND, and WY. Very few people, small towns and no traffic congestion. People up here would ask, how do you put up with being so close to your neighbors?
born and grew up in western ND (dickinson area) The badlands are nice to visit. However, uncle lives on the family farm around dickinson. With the Bakken Field going full bore, traffic is a mess, hotel rooms non existant, places to camp non existant. My advice is do it in a few years when the oil boom is leveled out and they can handle the traffic, people etc. From Dickinson ND to Glendive MT. expect a lot of traffic, not many places to stay.
If your interested in the badlands, go through SD and the black hills instead, then on to devils tower, into wyoming and up to billings. Lots to see and not the oil boom issues.
Stay off US-2 and the interstate isn't much better.

I saw yesterday that the oil companies in ND are building some indoor RV parks for their workers at Watford City. By all means, avoid that area. In Williston last year a Walmart cashier told us that Walmart is short 200 workers.
