A lot of the previous posts have been kind of negetive about visiting ND, and I would agree with some of them. However, being in the "middle of nowhere" could also be described as being in the center of the universe, just depends on your perspective, right? As far as the oil boom area, just stay east of hwy 83 & you'll be fine.
Now, a couple of positives. If, you get to the north central region of the state, check out Lake Metigoshe State Park, north of Bottineau, &/or the International Peace Garden, north of Dunseith, both worth looking into. There is a small park on the east side of Bottineau called Tommy Turtle Park which also has a few camp sites available. You can't miss it, just look for the giant turtle riding a snowmobile!! All of these can be found on the web if you need more info.

WOW, thank you all for your responds on North Dakota.. we have been to ND in the past but been many yrs. Have spend lots of time in SD and it is nice plus WY/MT. I plan on checking out all the plus/minus on post..
If you're thinking of boondocking then I'd say Teddy Roosevelt NP. It's on our list of places to return to. May not be as spectacular as Grand Canyon, Yellowstone or Crater Lake, but it has a beauty all its own. Wildlife includes prairie dogs, buffalo and wild horses and that was just in the South unit. Lots of hiking trails. Not crowded at all - one of the things I value in a National Park.
Go online and look for the North Dakota Tourism Bureau I was able to request for info and brochures and so much came (in a box and a large mailing envelope) I haven't been able to go through it all yet. It all depends on what your looking for to do for fun. Enjoy your trip and definitely stay off the Interstates unless your trying to make time. One of the drives I will remember for the rest of my life was a drive on US 40 from N/W Colorado to Reno Nevada. The loneliest Hwy in America.

there is a small town near the teddy park there is also the red river campground which if it hasn't changed had country music every night for free. there is also an outdoor show that is worth the bucks to see.
Other than that ND sucks.

I hope you enjoy your visit to North Dakota. We stayed in Medora as part of our Big Trip Out West a few summers ago. We really enjoyed Theodore Roosevelt National Park. We were able to get incredibly close to Buffalo and Wild Horses - much closer to wildlife than any other national park we visited.
It was great to see the Maltese Ranch cabin that Theodore Roosevelt lived in. He has been quoted as saying that his time in North Dakota was what made him the kind of man who could be president.

If your travels take you to Eastern North Dakota, you will find it very different from the West. It is much more flat which enables amazing views. In Fargo, the Hjemkomst museum with its Viking Ship replica is interesting. http://www.hjemkomstcenter.com/
