I am considering purchasing a Used 2001 Class A motorhome. How can I check if there is a lien against the vehicle, and how can I check if the vehicle has been in an accident.

Go to carfax.com for history of the vehicle. For lien holders, ask to visually see the title. Lien holders are listed on the vehicle title.

This is what I found online, but it's for the United States.
"Check the car for liens by writing down the VIN, and taking it to the nearest branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles. The DMV should be able to run a detailed car history, which will also list the previous owners of the vehicle and note whether the vehicle was ever in an accident. Any lienholders of the vehicle in question should be clearly noted on the report."
Found it here. I just googled, checking for a lien on a vehicle.

In Ontario, I believe, you can go to DMV and get the vehicle history for about $20.00 provided you have the VIN. The last page of that document should list liens and loans.

I should have mentioned in the original post that my search for a used motorhome will only be in Ontario Canada.
Thanks to all who have responded.

that is dependent on the state. Some states send the registered owner the title but mark it with a lien. A release of lien is required to transfer title. No idea what Canada does.

If a chattel loan using the coach as collateral was taken out after the vehicle was registered and licensed the lien will not show on the registration. You need to do a title search through the DMV. If you are applying for a loan, the lender will do it.

I wont be needing a loan and will try to avoid buying from a dealer (because of the dealer markup).

Not necessarily true. I have the titles to all of my vehicles and trailers in my desk drawer. Two of the vehicles have liens on them. One of the vehicles still has a lien on the title, but the lien release is paperclipped to the title, so if I sell it, when the title is transferred the lien will go away.
