Hi
my stock battery is a interstate start/deep battery about 2 years old
checked it and its in good shape . I would like to add a second battery and the dealership now carries interstate deep cycle . the salesperson told me its better than my original start/deep because its true deep cycle . Can i just add it or do i have to replace my original battery ? I am concerned about charging /discharging

Thanks

It's generally not recommended to mix age/type, but i'm sure it'll work fine.

Started with two 6s, added two 27DCs ("starting/deep-cycle")for four batteries in series parallel, got another 27DC two years later so went with three 27DCs and two 6s in a bank of 5, then later got four new 6s but still have the newer 27DC from before so sometimes I add that to the four 6s and still get a bank of 5.

In other words, ignore everybody and just do it!

Very unlikely it is a true deep cycle unless it is a 6v golf cart battery.
What is the model number of the battery?

I will support that advice as well.. The major difference, from your point of view, is that a TRUE DEEP CYCLE (Which some here say do not exist) can survive an "OPPS" better than a starting battery.

What is an Opps? Say voltage less than 10. (For a 12 volt battery) That is a very deep discharge.

NOTE: that even with true deeep cycle, OPPS is not recommended.

If you start/charge regularly, you will most likely not have much of an issue. However, during storage different battery types/ages will have different internal resistances and voltages and will discharge each other much quicker than identical batteries or a single battery will. If you isolate the two during storage then you remove this problem but should bring up to full charge individually prior to paralleling again.

The_ armadillo is right on. You can discharge them all as a bank and get Peukert working for you. You can charge them all together while camping doing your 50-90s.

But do their 90-100s at home separately and check each's SG to make sure each gets truly full. After that I don't mind floating them all together to prevent self-discharge, but that depends on how long before the next rrip before they start stratifying at different rates while floating.
