i think i would just remove him from my facebook and let him finish hanging himself..unfortunatly it sounds like he is going for free ride ..it sucks that it makes your life harder having to do his work load too..
if he is going for the free ride hopeful it back fires, cause they make it harder for those of us who truly have issues...
I would take him off my facebook page as fa riend. I'm sure you have befriended him, but understand that he's not just taking advantage of the company, but he's taking advantage of you and his other 'friends' that have been covering his territory. As the saying goes, "With friends like that, who needs enemies.". If he inquires why he was deleted as friend status, no need to lie about it, just say "I'm tired of carrying your load, and seeing all the comments from my fellow workers who are also tired of carrying your load doesn't help, so I've removed you until the situation changes." I find that speaking the truth, never needs to be defended.
I would agree that you should be staying out of it as far further compaining ON YOUR BEHALF to the company, but you also have a duty to forward the companys customers complaints on to the company. I'd ask HR for company complaint forms and start taking them with me to job sites. When a customer approaches you with a complaint, pass them a form and say "My company appreciates your input. Could you please fill out this customer satisfaction form." and then turn them in. That way it's not YOUR compaint, your just the messenger.
I'd also keep a private log of your site visits and what you observe. Date each entry. I've been involved as a juror in a court case where the employer sued a prior employees for unwarrented unemployment insurance payments fraudulantly obtained. You could be called in the future as a witness by your company. (the company won by the way).
He's probably sitting at home printing out all the comments beating him up on Facebook and he'll make that all part of his lawsuit against your company and maybe even against the employees making the comments. If I was them I wouldn't want to be part of that.
As for the bad back, just because you have a bad back doesn't mean you have to lay flat on your back all the time. I had back surgery in 2010 so my back is a lot better, but I still have to be very careful with it. Based on what you described of your job there is no way I could do it with my back. But I can work in my garden and fish. I just have to be careful with it.

Since HR has already asked for you not to have contact, I would delete the facebook friend and leave it at that. I am sure they already know about his FB page and monitor it regularly
Sounds like they are already handling it from their end. I would guess they are building a workers comp fraud case against him. It would be best for you to keep a log of what you find at sites that should be his.
If doing his route is hindering you from doing your route, I would make mention of this to supervisor. Mention that while you are willing to help out while someone is temporarily out, this looks like more of a permanent situation and they will need to hire someone to take his route. They most likely have to leave his job open in case he comes back, but they can hire someone temp until they get the situation resolved.
I am an employer not his but an employer just the same you have had good advice here so what are you going to do. He may really be hurt, maybe not but that is not the general public decision. DO your job and let HR do theirs. that way your are not useing your time worring about this. Larry

Thanks for the replies and the advice. I have deleted him from my FaceBook Page and cut my ties. If he calls me I will be polite and answer any questions he might have that are job related but I will not feed him any information. I do not plan to call him. Our work order system is computer generated and my branches can fill out a complaint form online, if someone complains to me again I will listen and point them in the direction of the online system. Several of the people at his sites have asked me to take those locations over, but I have a full plate already and dont need more sites.
You work for the Company. You are part of the Company and it is your loyal duty to the Company and yourself and Fellow Workers to bring it to the attention of HR. You've done your duty and as much as you can or should do.
It is up to them to handle the situation now. It is not in you job description.
Do your job to make the Company successful. Sometimes it means extra work.
Wife worked for a Company for over 40 years she was part of the Company, the Family. She and everyone else wanted to make the Company (the Family) successful. That's the only way to work, in my opinion. You spend the major part, of your life, working hopefully it will be as part of the enterprise.
The other side of the coin. Trying to help this Fellow, if a friend or otherwise, get a proper perspective doesn't seem to be in the cards. That's up to you. jmo
Just got a call from the boss today, it looks like we will be doing his route until further notice. He said he could not go into any detal, but be prepared to run his route for "the long haul". I asked him had they considered hiring a temporary guy to cover and he said they are looking into it, but again he wouldnt give me any details. I'm off until Monday so I guess I will see what happens between now and then.
What do you make of that?
