Contemplating two routes. I-29 to Sioux Falls, SD then I-90 across SD. Or I-29 to Omaha, NE pickup US 275 N to US 20 W across NE to US 385 North. I like the idea of as little interstate travel as possible. Also will be doing this in two days, so need an idea on where to stay approximately half-way. What is the terrain like across NE? Is I-29 open all the way to Sioux Falls? Whats the terrain on I-29 like? What are the speed limits? I am really not sure where to look for some of this info so any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks and happy camping, John.

highway 20 across NE is a pretty good state road, not a lot of traffic in the western half of the state. There's a walmart in chadron for stocking up before you get up into tourist country. and there's a very nice state park 7 miles south of town, with elec hookups, water and dump station.
or, there's a state park in SD off 385 called Angostura..there's a north campground and a south. both are pretty nice campgrounds.
for seeing mt rushmore, you can stay down in the Custer area. there are several rv parks in and near town, and there is a really nice state park, Custer State Park, about 2 miles east of town. lots of bison in the park and a beautiful scenic drive to mt rushmore called the Peter Norbeck scenic byway. 3 tunnels to go through and each of them frames mt. rushmore. and two pig tail curves.
have fun.

Nebraska and South Dakota are just as flat as Kansas - with the exception of the Black Hills. It's tempting to say that the only scenery on SD I90 is the Missouri River crossing.

For previous posts search this forum for `Mt. Rushmore'. For campground information only search is the RV Parks section. I hope you are going for more than Mt. Rushmore which you can do in about 2 hours or even less depending on how much time you spend in the gift shop.

Hi,

I-29 does not go to Rapid City. It also got badly torn up during flooding last summer. I would expect construction.

I'd take highway #2 west and go through Arcadia (there is a city park for RV's) and Chadron. That will allow you to approach Mount Rushmore from the south. That was my proposed route last summer. Due to flooding I had to change it.

The route I finally did end up on was farther north and I traveled through Basset and Chadron. There is a lovely campground at Keller State Recreational area just before Ainsworth.

This url may help you find inexpensive places to stay: http://freecampsites.net/#arcadia,%20ne

Arcadia is not on 2 but a bit east of it. O'Neill on 20 has a city park and area near rodeo grounds with hookups. Speed limits on 20 are generally 65 and good road. Long Pine area is very pretty along the way. You can also take I-29 to Sioux City and pick up 20 there. The most direct route from KC is to take 29 to Nebr. City then hiway 2 to Lincoln, then I-80 to Grand Island, then pick up 2 there and on up to Alliance and Chadron.

A few years ago I took 275 to 20 then turned north at Meriman with a shortcut through an Indian reservation (went through Kyle) and the back way into Badlands.

I29 is fine, Iowa DOT recovered it quickly as the road runs north and south, same as floodwaters did, which luckily caused little damage. East west roads were another story.

Thanks, I knew that. A case of fingers typing faster than the brain was thinking. Happens alot the older I get. LOL

Thanks for all the responses. I have been leaning on I-29 to Omaha, 275 to 20 and across to Chadron. With an overnight in O'Neill or Atkinson. Now I'll have to look into that 2 Hwy. Again thanks, John

If you have time and are interested in western history, especially the indian wars, try to take time and visit Ft. Robinson State Park further west on 20. It played a major role in the indian wars. Also visit the guard house and site where Crazy Horse died.
