I've had pretty good luck using my Kindle 3G's browser for simple internet access. It's slow and cumbersome but free and is handy for quick look-ups, e-mail, weather, news, etc. I couldn't get my Verizon mail to work but Gmail works fine so I simply auto-forward my Verizon email to Gmail.
It's not something you'd want to depend on as your only access but, when you're away from wi-fi and don't have a smart-phone, it's quite handy plus, it's free 3G.
In addition, there are some web-based "enhancers" such as:

Thanks I'll try it too.
I used the free 3G last summer when we were in Canada. Very handy to have some internet access when WiFi wasn't available.

Please clue me in -- I'm pretty geeky, but wasn't aware one could get free 3G access with a Kindle. Details if you please ... who is the carrier providing free 3G access? -- never heard of this. Thanks.

Last year we were camping in Matthews Arm in SNP and neither of our phones could find a signal in the campground. Somehow, the Kindle did, which really surprised us. It's not the easiest way access to the web (I have the older version without the touch screen), but it works sometimes where a phone doesn't.

The 3g comes on the kindle keyboard with wifi/3g. The provider is ATT. This is not the case with thr new kindles. The 3g only links to Amazon and Wikipedia.

crcr: Any device that lists 3g (not just internet capable) will get you on the internet via the towers that all smart phones use.

Looking on Amazon website, it appears that free 3G is only on the Kindle 3G touch, and only for book access, not normal web browsing.
This statement seems to tell it:
"Kindle Touch 3G is our easiest-to-use, most-convenient Kindle because there is no wireless setup--you are ready to shop, download, and read right out of the box."

We apologize for the confusion. Our new Kindle Touch 3G enables you to connect to the Kindle Store, download books and periodicals, and access Wikipedia - all over 3G or Wi-Fi. Experimental web browsing (outside of Wikipedia) on Kindle Touch 3G is only available over Wi-Fi.
Our Kindle Keyboard 3G will continue to offer experimental web browsing over 3G or Wi-Fi."

It looks like the Kindle Touch 3G and the Kindle Keyboard 3G have different experimental browsers.

I have the Keyboard and have used it just like any other device capable of connecting to the internet however it is cumbersome and slow so it's not something that I'd want to use daily but it's good when there aren't any other options. It doesn't support more than one page at a time so links often don't work. I can't access hotmail but gmail works. I've read RVNet and even posted. I've also read news sites and blogs.
