I've been lurking for a while and we've finally decided to make a trip. After searching on here, I've learned a little bit so I'll post up pertinent info first.
Tow Vehicle:
2011 Chevy 1500 Crew Cab Z71
5.3 V8
3.42 Gears
"Tow Package"
Max Tow 9,500
Passengers:
2 Adults
1 4 year old
1 82# lab
Trailer:
We are renting the following vehicle from Offutt AFB in Omaha, NE-
2011 Forest River Patriot Edition Camper
26'
4500 lbs (this is what the base website lists it at)
I know this is overkill for the 3(4) of us, but we want plenty of room and not feel cramped after the marathon.
The trip:
Lincoln, NE
to
Deadwood, SD
to
Pike's Peak, CO
to
Lincoln, NE
We have a marathon to run in Deadwood in early June. We plan to stay there for a few days and then head down to Pike's Peak area to do some sight seeing.
This will be our first multi-day RVing experience. We've rented 16' up in WA to take up in the mountains, but this will be a week long adventure.
I have found a few KOAs in the areas. What is the opinion on them? Do people recommend something different? I want to be within half an hour of the start of the marathon which is south of deadwood but I don't care how close to Pike's Peak we are.
Thank you and I'm glad to finally post on this forum!

Welcome to the forum! Deadwood has a number of campgrounds. You can check RV Park reviews for info on them. You will like the Mickelson. See you at the finish line.

Welcome to our addicton!
Just a thought, but you might want to park the trailer at the bottom instead of dragging it up & down Pike's Peak.
There is a lot of interesting history behind Pike's Peak in the Victor/Cripple Creek gold district if you have time.
I never get lost! Someone always tells me where to go!

It shouldn't be a problem as long as your WD hitch and sway control is used correctly.
As for campgrounds, in the Black Hills there are plenty. State Parks are hard to get into and you're inside the 90 day window.
South Dakota Tourism has a pretty good website of information.
The Mickelson Trail heads/deads in Deadwood. Running out of Deadwood will be a blast. Good luck.

When I see KOA's, I look for the next closest non KOA.
The KOA's are always 20 to 30 percent more expensive.

RV Park Reviews along with Passport America have campsite locatators and reviews on their websites. I would definitely check the reviews as some KOA's get glowign reviews and some, not so much.
You can see what I tow adn drive in my signature and your a little heavier TT than I have. Mine does fine on the modest hills of Ohio, Ky, Indiana but have not had it out in anything like where your heading. As mentioned above, take some time and setup the WD hitch properly when you pick up the rental trailer and take your time and you should be fine.

Is the hitch that comes with my truck a WD hitch?
If so, is there a youtube video or post on here on how to set them up?

Since you stated you have a "Tow Package" I would assume you have a Class III hitch with a 2" square opening.
This is just the "Receiver" The hitch (WD or otherwise) slip into the receiver.
Insist on a WD hitch from your rental agent. Also make them adjust it to the stance of your TV
There are lots of videos on the subject on youtube.
