Back in the 80's when boating was the boom, I too got caught up in the euphoria of it all, no different than RV'ing today. I traveled the Upper Niagara River (before the Falls) and also the lower Niagara, below the Falls. In addition, I locked through the Welland Canal, connecting Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, on several occasions. In nautical terms, the Niagara River is one of the few bodies of water in the world that is considered "By the Sea" in either direction, the sea being the Atlantic Ocean. What this means is when navigating on water the number 1 rule is "Red Right Return" meaning the color the the navigation buoys. Red, and the side of the water way that it is on is determined by which way the water "Flows From the Sea". This is not to be confused by the direction the currant is flowing, which in the Niagara's case is north to south. Perhaps this type of information is where the writer erred in his story on Niagara Falls.
Sorry to high jack the thread and get off course of the Newell conversation.
I was told back in the '70s that a full page color ad in a sailing magazine cost about $100K. If you divide that by the number of coaches (or sail boats) sold in a year, you can figure out how much is added to the cost of each unit to pay for the ad. Perhaps, it's better that they didn't pay to ship a coach to the Alps for a photo shoot!

AS to the Slide out seams. I was at HWH(training) back in 1996 when the Newell Engineer was there developing with HWH the first Newell Slideout. He required that when the slide was retracted, there was a uniform (perfect in engineering lingo) 1/4 inch up and across the top and then down the back gap seam and they had that almost perfected. They DID get it perfected, but after I left, and it was an amazing design. Doug
This is a very interesting thread. Here is The Real Story.
The coach in the ad is not a photograph but actually a computer rendering depicting a new, updated design we commissioned in partnership with Porsche Design. And yes, the rendering of the coach was dropped into the rather fanciful Sound of Music background. (By way of coincidence, Porsche Design is located in Austria.)
Anyway, with the long lead times required for these ads and the first of the new design production coaches not scheduled to be finished and available for a photo shoot until late May, the only way to have a "current" coach in this ad was to use a computer rendering. Had a real coach photograph been used, it would have been the design that is now out of production.

I think it's brilliant that manufacturers are watching the forum. Nothing like hearing feedback and mining ideas directly from Rv'ers. And more to the point, respond.
Just what we needed....a bunch of facts to mess up all of the bickering.
Very cool that you took the time to post. I'll put one of your coaches on my Bucket List!

Exactly the kind of professional response I would expect from a first-class company. Thank you for your response.

Karl,
Thank you for explaining Newells reasoning behind the ad. I can't say that I agree with combining a rendering with a photo. Not to worry, Newell still makes the finest coach available.
