1993 coachmen, E350, 24 foot, 460 engine.

When I go to hit the switch on the control panel above the stove to start the generator, there is no click, and then it makes all of my 12v ceiling lights go out. If I wait 2 minutes, everything clicks back on by itself.

If I do the same thing when the vehicle has shore power, the lights don't go out, but the generator makes a ratcheting sound, then the starter on it spins freely. I also noticed that I hear no click on the emergency start switch on the dash when I hold it down. Now I'm afraid if I dry camp that for some reason I won't have any lights or anything. Any ideas? Help!

Sounds like two problems maybe.

No lights and no click has been a lack of 'ground'.

The spinning of the gen starter has been a sticking start button.

Remove and clean all cables grounding at a common point. It our case it is at a bolt welded to the chassis frame.

Gale is right. In addition, check your connections on the coach battery. Positive and negative

Check the generator- there is usually another start switch there- could be a bad ground or common connection.

I also think Gale hit the nail one head. It has all the symptoms of a faulty ground or "weak" ground. Clean the cable connections.

Hi,

Is it always exactly 2 minutes? If so, I'd be suspicious that there is a short in the wiring to the generator starter and that the automatic circuit breaker is over loading.

I'll have to check it out. Would a bad ground make the starter on the generator spin up? This is only when I'm on shore. When I go to just battery I get nothing.

Sounds more like a starter selinoid to me. When they get older they require more juice to engage. Thats why on a older car you can sometimes get to work by jumping. Try to rap on the selinoid with a hammer. Do this while trying to start. If it starts turning over you need a selinoid. In case you dont know where it is follow the main battery lead to the starter. On the starter there should be a cylinder mounted to it that would be the selinoid. Hope this helps.
