I am getting a gray tank smell from the kitchen sink. I get the smell when traveling and also immediately after draining water from the kitchen sink. Those are the only times I get the odor. I replaced the vent valve under the sink but that did not solve the problem.

There is another vent valve by the bathroom sink. Replace that one too! I also found a broken vent pipe up near the roof, behind a panel in a cabinet in the bathroom.

The bathroom has a separate gray tank and I get no odors from it.

Could be something to do with the P traps under the sink not holding water. May be creating a siphon effect that pulls water out of them.

You've already replaced the 'vent valve' which can let grey tank odors came back up from tank (and prevents 'P' traps from being sucked dry).

So it sounds like the drain line from sink and 'P' trap need cleaned. Grease/soap scrum/food debris can build up and stink.

Disconnect line from bottom of sink and downstream side of trap...take outside and give it a good cleaning.

Also check for loose fittings and/or cracked piping.

After travelling, the water in the 'p' trap has drained to the tank. After draining sink water (dishwashing ??) the 'rush' of the draining water will not leave enough in the 'p' trap to block the odor. So...

Run the faucet on slow for a few seconds to fill the 'p' trap up, to keep odor out.

then report back with results so we will know if that works for you.

The RV is almost new and has not been used enough for any build up of grease or anything. It has two gray tanks and one black tank but I only see two roof vents both over the bathroom. I am worried the factory failed to vent the galley tank.

Get a vacuum or air hose and use it on top of the vents that are on top, while someone else listen at the sinks and toilet. Then you will know what is getting vented.

I doubt they forgot to put the vents in place, but anything is possible.

I have been getting some smell if someone holds the toilet valve open a few seconds too long, but its because the temps have been over 80*F now. And....the roof vents are close to the crank up air vents. So when the breeze is wrong (not just right), some smell must be coming in from them.

I recommend putting a Camco (Walmart)finned vents on your kitchen and black vent stacks. Then let the tanks fill before dumping each time. This solved my problems.

Hi All.

Sounds like for some reason, your not keeping water in your P-Traps, thus letting the smells form the Gray Tank enter your RV.

Pretty simple sultion, one, is to fix the problem. Two, always keep "Sink Stoppers" in all of your Drains. No oders are going to get past those.

We have been using "Sink Stoppers" for the past 45- years as RV'ers.

Good Luck. Happy Travels. Dan & Jill
