I do appreciate professional truck drivers very much. For a few years I transported prisoners in LA County. Tandem buses aren't as heavy as tractor trailer rigs but I certainly understand the problems when the little rice rockets zip into your lane within 5 or 6 feet and apply their brakes and expect you to be able to stop a big rig as fast as they can stop their rice rocket. I had to drive my vehicle and anticipate what the other vehicles were going to do all the time. Not an easy job.

There's another worse thing than people going 45 at the end of an off-ramp. The ones that think the white line that merges them into traffic is a brick wall and they either have to come to a stop at the end of the ramp or force their way in by the time they cross the line. There's a few that are rather inhospitable on the other side of that line...but for the most part, they just turn into a break-down lane.

Well, the lane is mine and I do the best I can to slow down and or move into the left lane, but, when some nimrod hits the gas at the last minute as the murge lane is ending (one ton drw, 32ft trailer, iron bull bumper) I drift to the right. You will be supprised how fast they hit their breaks.

The Aussies have good idea, two bigspeed limit signs on either side of the on ramp. Maybe some drivers might catch the hint.

I always move left one lane when traffic is coming to merge if I can. Don't feel like a accident.

in our state the drivers are the kind that would run you right in the ditch each and every chance they get ....but when they get to the store they will hold the door open for you ?????????? anyways i just try and stay out of the slow lane (left lane) whenever possible ... just for that reason !
i try not let others ruin our drive ,,, but i sure have a hard time to turn a blind eye to some person that just has to be in front of you so they can slow down ?( i am speaking directly of the habits of the poeple i have experianced with mergeing ) any how , i think
xanax has helped me best with others very bad driving habits ...
i would just as soon take my family camping on a monday and drive in the middle of the night , as to deal with wonderful drivers that adorn our interstate's ! thats just me though !

Personally, if I can move over, I do. I like to be a courteous driver and will do what I can when I can to help the flow of traffic.

If I can't move over, tough rocks, buddy. I'm only doing 60-65 to start with. If you don't have the foresight to anticipate that you need to be moving at the speed of traffic to merge at the end of the on-ramp, or the consideration to look over your shoulder to check your blind spot for a 55 foot long rig, that's your problem to deal with. I've had LOTS of merging attempts end in failure (and by failure, I mean the merging car rides the shoulder past the end of the on-ramp)... I just don't care anymore. Getting my blood pressure up isn't going to make you a better driver, so I gave that up years ago.

Not to hijack, but why do folks in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Massachussets STOP at the end of an on-ramp to merge??? I pretty much plan on it happening when traveling through there, so it doesn't catch me by surprise anymore, but it's still frustrating as hell!!

x2

I have found most of them DO NOT LOOOK UNTIL THEY ARE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE RAMP ABOUT TO MERGE which is why I start blowing my horn as I approach the on ramp...the looks on their faced when they finally do look is priceless

Thanks for all the input. At least I don't feel all alone. I started staying in the right lane, because (as many have said) it's hard to get back into the right lane if you use the left lane to let them on. And to the professional truck drivers (GOD bless them) I say thank you. Gypsy truckers think they own the road and purposely harass us. I have never encountered such heavy traffic were I couldn't get in the left lane to allow oncoming traffic. People just don't give you a break and a turn signal is ignored. Two lanes of bumper to bumper traffic is not very common on a Sunday afternoon. Maybe the people who drive 322/22 in the Harrisburg area are more familiar with this than I. Now, lets hear some more pet peeves on driving an RV. Oh! and do air horns really help?
