When traveling on an interstate and you are approaching an on ramp with a line of traffic, what do you do?? Yesterday, returning from a wonderful weekend, it was ruined by an idiot driver. I was approaching a on ramp, traffic was real heavy, I couldn't get into the left lane. I was doing 5 miles under the speed limit and had 4 car lengths in front of me. That didn't last long because as cars passed they cut in front of me. I got to the onramp and assuming they would have to stop because they have to yeild, boy was I wrong. They just kept coming and cut me off to the point I had to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting a family of four. What do you do? Always get into the passing lane (if possible)or stay in the driving lane????

I've made it a habit to move to left lane if it looks like the on coming ramp traffic & I will interact.

If you leave more than half a car length in front somebody will jam hi/her way in. If people would be polite and alternate everything would be fine.

I pray for 3 lane highways and loiter in the middle. Otherwise, if safe, I scoot left to allow them to merge.

I move to the left lane if possible. If I can't, it's up to the vehicles coming in to get up to speed and merge safely either in front, or behind me. But if they try and force me to move over when I can't, that's when I sit on the horn.

Move to the left if possible. Merging in that situation is a two driver cooperative endeavor, but unfortunately you can't rely on other's cooperation. Oh, and also don't let "idiot drivers" ruin your weekend, or you'll never have a good one again! Happy trails!

When I can safely, I move over and give them the right lane and then move back over at the first chance I get.
I've submitted a Bill proposal to my Ohio State Senator to give every driver a paint ball gun and a color based on the county they live in. Drivers are allowed to shoot cars that are driven by idiots and once a car has more than two colors on their car, OH State Patrol should monitor them closely. I havn't heard back from him yet. Hopefully he got a good laugh out of the letter but I'm holding out hope it will get put in a bill someday ;-)

When pulling the trailer, I prefer to just slow down however much it takes to help the on-ramp folks get on the highway. If I move over to the left lane, sometimes it takes a while to find a hole to move back to the right lane.

This is one of my pet peaves. The driver on the on ramp is legally required to yield and it is his responsibility to merge with and yield to traffic and you are not required to pull into the left lane or slow down to "let him in". However, the reality is that the merging driver often just merges anyway no matter what so to protect myself I assume that he may not yield to me and I try to avoid the situation by moving over or slowing down.

I always try to move over when there are cars coming down an on ramp, sometimes the folks coming up behind me are PO'ed, but that is just tough. I've had jerks come right out into the traffic lane without using the acceleration ramp.
