My TT is going on 8 years old now and still looks in great shape with the exception of the wheels. The center caps are platic and look terriable, not sure what I can do there but I figured I could paint the wheels to give them a refreshed look. Any suggestions on what I need to do to prep them and what type of paint I should use and so on?

Thank You,

Tim

I just painted the wheels on my enclosed utility trailer. As most painted items, removing any oil or grease from the surface is required. For this I used mineral spirits. After scuffing the surface, I wiped the wheel down once again using mineral spirits. Let this dry completely before painting. I used the "Hammered" surface paint from Rust-O-Leum. Apply light coats until you get the coverage you want. Let dry thoroughly before handlilng the wheel.

Good luck !!

Just before I replaced my tires 2 years ago, I took them off one at a time, sanded them and laid flat on the ground and brushed on multiple coats of oil based Rustoleum white paint. I was planning to replace the tires so I did not have to worry about getting any on the stems or the old tires. While off mine has chrome center caps, they had some rust spots but Turtle Wax chrome polish took care of that. You have to look close to see any brush marks and at around 5 dollars for paint, sandpaper and some foam brushes it beat the cost of new wheels.

One thing I've learned is that even when the paint looks "dry" it's still very fragile until it's fully cured, which takes about a week in most circumstances. (The pros use "ovens" to hasten this process).

If you can wait that week before using/exposing the wheels to roadgravel, etc. they'll be much less susceptible to chips in the paint. Better yet is to keep them off the rig until fully cured- lugnuts installed over uncured paint will lift it off the first time they're removed.

I recently painted the rims that are on my old Jeep CJ7. I used paint stripper to remove the original paint. It took them down to bare metal with very very minimal effort. You just brush it on let it sit and the paint bubbles up and you peel it off.

After that I cleaned them to make sure there ws no more stripper on them, lightly sanded them, and painted them with Ace Hardware version of Rustoleum Stops Rust. That was a year ago and they still look great even after a couple off road trips. Like mentioned earlier the longer you can wait after painted the better off you will be. Super easy to touch up as well.

When I painted my wheels I went ahead & scuffed the plastic center caps and painted them also. I am now going to scuff the stove vent & door window frames and cover that yellow with some gloss white.

Get new caps and spray away. Although last time I did this I sent them to a place that did powder coating.
