Cancelling the paper is better than stopping it.
You can get timers that do random settings so you don't have lights coming on at the same time every day.
Have a alarm? Make sure that he person watching house has a code and a password in case they set it off. Make sure alarm Co has your cell number.
Make sure person watching knows where water and electric shut offs are.
Have a back up person to watch should anything happen to the first.

If leaving food in freezer put coin on top of ice in small container. If coin not on top of ice when you get home - good chance food bad.
We have water well, septic system, water softner and reverse osmosis sytem so for the really long trips we leave water on (hot water heater off) and have house sitter run water at every fixture, flush toilets and run water thru RO system for several minutes at least twice a month. Only problem we ever had was STINKY water when we left hot water heater on for three months with no water usage. Freezing temps - another plan.

I watch my neighbors house while they winter in Florida.
DD's father-in-law is a retired insurance adjuster. He stated if anything happens and the insurance company asks how often you checked the house, the answer is "once a week."

It may be too late for your next trip, but you should consider having your utility bills automatically charged to your checking account or credit card. That way you don't have to worry about missing a bill payment. Then on a monthly basis, call the credit card company and find out how much you owe them and mail a check; have your bank statement forwarded to an address where you can receive it to see how much was deducted for certain utility costs. Some utilities are OK with credit cards, some only want checking account charges, depends on the outfit. We've done this for over a year and it sure saves worrying about a utility bill not getting paid.

most credit card accounts can be accessed and paid on line. we've had all of our bills, except the credit cards, auto paid thru our checking account for years now. i get e-mail notification of a pending debit so it can be added to the register. i also get monthly e-mail regarding our credit card statement in plenty of time to retrieve the statement, balance the accout and schedule an automatic payment from our checking account. our pension checks are automatically deposited a well. it sure is a lot simpler being on the road, at least from a financial POV than it was 25-years ago.

Definitely turn the water off at the inlet or meter. You can also open all of your faucets and flush all of the toilets to get excess water to drain. If a pipe were to burst, you might have a wet spot from residual water in the pipes, but no flooding. Leave water in the water heater, but turn it off, and shut off the gas supply to it so it won't be heating all that time.

We turn off the water & open a few taps. We cover our toilets with 2 large garbage bags & put a bit of oil in each fixture trap ( including dishwasher ). This keeps traps from drying out & allowing sewer gases into house. I save old cooking oil for this. All non-essential power is turned off @ breakers. YMMV.

I suggest you also shut off the water to each of your toilets. As a poster mentioned above, toilet tanks sometimes crack for no reason (happened to us two weeks ago - thankfully we were home). Also, shut off the water to your washer - those hoses can blow.
Nothing worse than coming home to a flooded house...

If you do nothing else, SHUT OFF THE WATER. My neighbors went to Disney for a week and came back to a house full of water. Over 275K in damages. I myself have a very good friend and neighbor go through the house daily just to check. Yes the water is still off.
