The only time I see the quality (or lack thereof) change, is when these companies start getting some off shore competition. The RV industry needs to wake up and learn from the auto industry. It is only after Honda's and Toyota's became readily available did the consumer realize that we don't have to be forced into buying this garbage anymore.

I did the same thing the first weekend I had my new trailer. I booked a one night stay at a State Park just a short trip from home. I spent some time at the football stadium learning how to back it into a site, then got to the park early enough to spend the day deciding where I wanted things, testing things out, and reading the manuals. I also made a list of things I needed to buy and questions I needed to ask. Fortunately for me, everything went well. After that, I set goals for each subsequent trip for what "operations" I wanted to learn and practice. Now I am almost completely comfortable with the trailer experience. What do I like the least? I see your water heater issues and raise you slideout issues, shower issues, toilet issues, and awning issues.
Went out in my new 2012 TT. When I went to leave, I closed the slide for the fourth time since I brought the trailer home. They routed to wire to one of the slide motors between the slideout floor and the main floor and up through the inside of one of the slideout bulb seals. Fortunately I heard the seal being ripped off the wall before pulling the wire out of the motor. It took a half hour working it back and forth a bit and with a pry bar between the two floors to get the slide closed without ripping the wire out. Unfortunately when I got home, I had to run the slide out halfway to get the TV and my $600 digital camera out. It took almost 2 hours to get the slide to close all the way.
The shower pan was cracked and not supported properly. It felt like I was on a moonbounce trying to take a shower.
The valve in the back of the toilet to control the flush water was constantly dripping on the floor (most likely due to an incomplete winterization by the dealer prior to me buying it).
The wind managed to get the fabric on the power awning out of whack. It wouldn't roll all the way up because the arms would bind.
I also discovered one of my valences, which have the blinds and the strings installed in them, is loose. You can move the thing up and down about 3/8".
Prior to going on the trip, the dealer had to replace the top slideout seal. I ended up fixing the leak in the skylight and a half dozen other small items (I had one key lock on a baggage door on one side where the cam wouldn't go down to lock -- had to turn the cam 90 degrees; and a thumb turn latch on the baggage door on the other side had the same problem). The list goes on and on.
I dropped the trailer on the dealer's lot Sunday and used the night drop. I insisted that they move the slide controller over where the switch is by the door and run the wires through the underbelly. I also insisted if they had any other ideas they need to talk to me first. I haven't heard from them -- and there was only one other trailer sitting on the lot for service. The first time I dropped it off for the seal issue (which they did an excellent job of fixing -- requiring a little mod to the system to make it work right), they had about a half dozen trailers and motorhomes sitting there and they had mine fixed in two days. So I'm thinking they agree with me.
