I take my sewing machine everywhere I go! I usually sew at the picnic table and get some odd glances. Oh well, I'm also making a few $$. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my DH will get me an embroidery machine for my birthday in June!

I've never had an issue blowing the electric even with the furnace, lights, TV and coffee maker on too. I love camping!

Me too! And it just keeps getting better!!
Hope you get the embroidery machine Lots-O-fun but very addicting!

Ooo! A Lots-O-fun sounds like lots o fun!! Thanks for the tip!

Keep in mind that usually when you are sewing you also need to have a iron on and that would most likely be too much draw. I cannot run my sewing machine and iron off the same outlet.

this is a first for me - why do you need an iron on when you sew?

to press open the seams, etc.

An iron is as important as a pair of scissors.

But for embroidery you only need the iron to apply the stabilizer, if you're using iron-on stabilizer. I've done it several times - my Brother Innovis 4000D fits perfectly on the computer desk in the bedroom of the RV and it'll happily run all day long along with the AC, and the wife watching TV. I turn the iron on when I need to apply some stabilizer, then turn it off again.

I checked my machine. It did not list amps...120V..I tried it yesterday, without the a/c on and it was ok.I didnt have anything else on except the fridge. I am embroidering quilt squares that I am going to sew together after it get them done. I wont iron until I have a handful, and then I wont have the machine on so that shouldn't be a problem. I have a Brother ULT 2001 We took the sofa out and brought a table to put in its place. Ikea makes smaller furniture so it fit perfectly. i thought I would iron outside on the picnic table so the steam doesn't fill the camper! Happy sewing everyone!

DW runs Brother embroidery machines during her ME time, while camping.

Several years ago she lost a main board in an Innovis, due to dirty voltage at campgrounds.(true cause unknown but highly suspected)

Per recommendations of Brother's Tech Dept. she now only runs them attached to an APC(brand) UPC (uninterruptible power supply) to protect her from future unwanted trips to the Brother dealer.

A good UPS is cheap insurance for such an expensive hobby.

Here's what she uses APC clicky

She'll be amazed to hear about this thread, she thinks that, she's the only one addicted enough, to drag all that stuff camping.

Hmmm.... Maybe RV.net needs to add a "hobbies while camping" section

This is what I do when I want to run additional items and not worry about tripping my trailer 30A breaker on the pole.

SOmeone else just mentioned this here as well.

Pick up a 25-30 foot extension cord and plug this into the 20AMP receptacle on the pedestal. Run this extension cord to the picnic table or where you are working. You should be able to plug your machine and iron into this extension cord. This will not affect anything your are doing with your trailer being plugged into the 30A connection.

I do this all the time when it is cool and we need more heat in the trailer. We will run an oil filled electric herater from the extension cord running thru a window or door. It is always better to use the sites electricity instead of using your propane to run a heater.

I dont own a bigger trailer but I bet you could run the extension cord thru the pass-thru storage area and up into the bedroom area thru the dirty clothes drop and go to anywhere you need it inside the trailer...

Hope this helps.

I never thought about a backup power supply. I have my machine hooked up to a surge protector, but didn't know about the other. I will look into it. Expensive hobby is right! I haven't checked the pedestal to see if I could run an extension from there, we don't have a laundry shoot on the trailer, there might be room where the main power hooks up though
Don, I have been amazed since I started asking about this how many women travel with their machines!
