I'm looking for an A/C unit for my Pop-up TC. I would like to try a roof top mounted unit, the Coleman 9000BTU is about 95 lbs. I think this may be too much weight acting as a point load on the top...Has anyone seen a roof top A/C unit on a pop-up?
If it is too much weight in one spot I'm thinking of building a roof rack and having the A/C unit actually mounted to the rack rather than the roof. This way the weight from the A/C unit will be distributed through the mounting locations of the roof rack rather than directly in one spot. I could simply build a shroud between the A/C unit and the hole in the roof...Do you think this idea has potential?

Forgot to mention that I would also add four gas struts (2 front/2 rear) 40-60lbers to help with the added weight of the rack & A/C unit when popping the top.

Tell me why it is on 5 plus skids. Gotta be a big truck it came off of.
can you mount a side wall AC that you buy for $88.00 instead if an expensive roof top?

I would first say, call the manufacturer, but I would say that second, you're fine.
I say that because I've personally worked on pop-up trailers that had roof airs on them, and I can't image those are built all that stout.
I bought one a while back off Craigslist for $250 because I wanted the roof air for my park model out at the WA coast. I pulled the roof air out, put in a vent, sealed it, and sold it for $500. It had an axle weight of under 1,000lbs.

It's an old 1986 Pop up made by Four Seasons (not many made, manufacturer isnt around anymore).

It's an aluminum roof with I think 1x2 or 2x2 framing.

Not to knock hodag, but don't do that. Looks redneck, and in a rig that size, space is at a premium.
Look on Craigslist for a cheap donor pop-up or travel trailer with a SMALL roof air on it. Take the roof air out, replace it with a $20 vent, and flip it. I ended up MAKING $250 when I did it!
As far as can it handle it, look to see what kind of framing the roof has. Pop up trailers have next-to-nothing for framing and they do fine. I would say if you have 2x2s up there, you're fine for a small roof air.
You could also just do a little reinforcing if needed. Won't take much for a small one.

The wall-mount ones aren't that cheesy are they? Northstar equips some mounted in the back window at the factory.
The A-frame popup trailers usually have the ACs sticking out the side...yeah maybe the roof does look better. But that 4 Seasons is so wonderfully sleek and low-profile it would almost be a shame to put anything on the roof!

Boatycall,
Thanks for the redneck complement! I wish I had a wall mount heat pump in my Outfitter instead of the roof mount AC and wall mount propane furnace.
