I've been looking at a 99 DP with orginal tires (dated 98) with 80K+ miles. If I do make a deal, the first thing will be six new tires.

The vendor specs (Dutch Star 3865) states tire size is 255/80R 22.5
However very few places seem to carry this size.

I've noticed other adds for the same vehicle stating they have 275/70R 22.5 tires on them.

What sort of tire range can I use if I can't easily find the vendor recommended size using the same rims etc? Are there any safety issues using a different "sized" tire?

Thanks

Chris

A 265/75R22.5 and Michelin's 255/80R22.5 is the same size...Michelin is just weird.

A 275/70 will probably fit...diameter is the same, though they are a bit wider.

The tires on your coach should be 275x70x22.5. In late 90's Newmar, Freightliner and Spartan installed 255x80x22.5.They were maxed out leaving the factory. They never changed out the DOT plates in the Motorhomes to reflect the fact, refering to the ones on the wall behind the drivers seat.
They had recalls to change the front tires out, cant imagine how yours got missed. I would call Newmar get a Tech Support you will need the VIN number and ask them for the story and see if yours were ever changed out, never know maybe you can get the front tires for free????
Been alot about this on other forumns and I personally called newmar, spartan about this issue. Mine had been changed out and then someone put 255x80x22.5 back on.
The only way I found out after buying ours last year I scaled it , came in around 10,100 on the front and 14,400 0n the rear. 255x80x22.5 pumped to max air are only good for something like 10'600 on the front. So if you wanted to run empty and no passengers they might worked. Hope this helps.Get the 275x70x22.5 tires on before the deal, watch the salesmans jaw drop when you tell him the tires are undersized..

When I was shopping for tires, dealers told me that 265/75, 275/70 and 255/80 are all about the same size and are interchangeable. They also indicated the 275/75 and 285/70 require the 8.5 inch wide rim. Your coach probably has the narrower rim.

Razor1949 has this one right. 255/80's are too small. It NEEDS 275/70's on it, and was recalled to put them on.

Chris , The coach's tire size is 275x70x22.5 not the 255x80x22.5. Spartan or Freightliner along with Newmar failed badly on this one . The tires stated above are basically the same size, the difference is the weight they will carry. What a coach weighs is how they size tires to it. The 275x70x22.5 will fit , no problem.

Thanks all for the advice. I will have to contact the dealer as they just emailed me that they have decided to put new six new tires on (and up the asking price accordingly).

If you buy the motorhome , I would still contact Spartan, Freightliner, Newmar and find out if the front tires were changed out on recall.Someone just a few months ago found out his were never changed and he was reimbursed for the front tires even after all this time.A couple tires are worth anywhere from $600.00 to $1200.00, its worth a couple phone calls.

Thanks for the info. I have just put an offer in but depending on the tires. The sales guy emailed me that the MH is at the tire dealer and he will confirm the new tire size tomorrow. If its not what is recommended here and they wont change it, no deal.
I can't run over and check as the dealer is about 700KM (430 miles) away.
